West End Club Opens for Play The West Bnd«Tennis Club held its official opening for the 1937-38 season on Thursday, under ideal weather eonditions, A very large gathering of piayerg and enthusiasts from all the Hastings' dubs participated in a Yan- . kee tournament. Mr. A. Hampton, president of the club, warmly welcomed the visitors and wished the ciuh a successful season. Mr. A. I. Rainbow, in formaJly de- , claring tiie courts open for the season, deputised for Mr. G; A. Maddison, patron of the cslub, and remarked on the xapid growth and advancement of the dub. He congratulated the management comxnittee on the fine work they had done. Mr* R>. D. JBrown, president of the Hawke's Bay Lawn Tennis Association, presented to the dub captain the Luxford Shield and pennant which the dub had be^i successful in winning last season. After keenly-Contested, games the final in the Yankee tournament was played between Mrs. Manning and R. Clark and Mrs. Scott-Kelly and H. McKerrell, tbe latter pair proving the winners. A very enjoyable afternoon-tea was provided by the ladies, and thanks are duo to them for their work.
