WELLINGTON, Last Night. The small, gelect band of New Zealand historians sufrered a seyere loss by the death this morning of Mr. horuce Edward Manners Fildes, of .Kelburn, .Wellington, whose. passing was so sudden and unexpected as to come as/* shock not . only to -many friends in Neyr Zealand and abroad, but •to large, numbers ;of . New Zealanders who "have appreciated, admired ..and profited' from his historical studies and researches. , . , . The late Mr. Fildes was the second son of the lat^ Mr. J. G. Fildes, who for many years was ' manager of the Bank of New Zealand. -His - mother Was a daugh'ter of Mr. James J. Taine, who came to New- Zealand in 1840 and was identified with the establishment of several financial institutions in the early days. . . Mr, Fildes was bom at. Temuka in 1875 and spent most «f his lifetime in Wellington. He leaves a .widow, who is a daughter oi Mr. and Mrs. John Harris, of Christchurch, three brothers, Mr. Percy A. Fildes, of . Sydney, Mr. R. F. B. Fildes, of Wellington, and Mr. L.. L. Fildes, of Auckland.
