Speeding Motorists Face Charges MISCELLANEOUS CASES Echoes of the Test match between the Springboks and the All Blacks were heard iu the Hastings Magistrate's Court yesterday when three motorists appeared before Mr J. Miller, S.M., eharged with driving at a speed which might have been dangerous to the public on the day of the Test. The first defendant, William A. "Wallace, a labourer. was eharged on the information of Traffic-J nspector H. R. Semple, the oifence being allegedly committed at Manghteretere on the Napier-Palmerston North highway. A fifte of £2 10/'- with costs 12/- was impbsed. . William J..Foley, of Taihape, faced a similar charge brought by TrafficInspector D. Mann, in respect of Railway road. Pleading guilty by letter, defendant said he was a stranger to llastings and had failed to notice the 30-miIe-limit sign. A fine of £1 10/with costs io /- was imposed. Wi Duncan, of Dannevirke, was fined £1 10/- with costs 17/-, when he pleaded guilty to driving a, public motor-car in Railway road at a speed which might have been dangerous to the public. •• For operating a heavy-traffic vebicie without having a heavy-traffic licence, Peter Charles Peterson was fined 15/- with costs 10/-, it being explained that the case was merely one of neglect as a licence had b^n taken out the following. day. Grrison Lange was fined 15/- with costs 10/- for riding a bicycle in St. Aubyn street without a light, his excuse being that he was riding a borrow-, ed cycle while his own , which was l'ully equipped, was under repair. "A good deal of glass is thrown on the road in this way, and I am glad he did something to rectify it," said the Magistrate, when A. Mathews was fined 10/- with costs of the eame amount on a charge of throwing glass on to the road. A plea of guilty was entered by Mr W. Selwyn Averill. "This young man was driving along Omahu road with some companions and threw some bottles from the car on to the road where they broke/' said Sewor-Sergeaiit G. Sivyer. "The trouble was," said Mr Averill, "that the defendant, who was driving the car, had tried to throw a bottle clear of the roadway but he could not get a good swing with the result that it fell- on the bitumen . He got out and picked up the bigger pieces." For allowing 15 cows to graze. in Hastings street H. T. Fannin was fihed 10/- with costs 10/-. Mildred Woods (Mr Averill), was fined 5/- with costs of 10/- for allowing nine cows to graze upon Terrace road. Defendant pleaded not guilty, the defence maintaining that the cattle were being driven along the road to a paddock and were not being grazed on the road. The oifence was committed at 4.30 o'clock in the morning, said Inspector H. A. Green. "Cattle-wandering has become serious now on account of the amount of traffic on the roads," remarked Mr Miller, but in these two cases it is more a matter of protecting private property, so I will rnake the fines light.'! Herbert W. Hinton was fined 5/with costs' 10/- for operating a light delivery truck without a windscreen wiper. Harold He'ron, for failing to give way to traffic approaching from the right at an intersection t was convicted and fined £3 with costs' 10/-.
