LARGE NATIVE FUNERAL
Descendant of Rawhiti One of the largest native funerals held in the North for some time was that of the late Paea Keretene, wife of Canon Wiremu Cherrington, on Saturday. Five hundred people, ineluding representatives of the five major tribes of the Ngapuhis, were- present at the graveside at St, James's Church, Ngararatunua. She was leader of her raee in objects for the betterment of the Maoris spiritually and materially. She traced her descent back to . Rawhiti, the wellknown Ngapuhi clftef who led the assauit at Ruapekapeka She was married to the Rev. W. Cherrington at Taumarere 40 years ago, and assisted him in various pastorates, ineluding Helesville, Arakei, Waimate North and Ngararatunua. Mrs Cherrington was one of those instrumental in the formation of 30 native branehes of the women 's union in the diocese of Auckland. Another notable work in which she interested herself was the ^ encouragemCnt of her tribe, the Ngatihiue, towards participation in native land development schemes.
