PAKANUI IN FORM

* "The BaT^")

Brilliant Gallop at Hastings This Morning FINAL PREPARATIONS

(By

Easily the best gallop among the finalists for the Hawke's Bay spring meeting to take plaee on the Hastings racecourse op Saturday was that of Pakanui, who onpe again. set a pace that othere among the 100-odd could not reach, The going was perfect. Nevertheless, Pakanui 's effort was sometbipg abave the ordinary. The many track watchers out this morning ' were treated to a very interesting morning 's entertainment, but it is very doubtful if they were any the wiser for i their vigilance, so even were the many i times recorded. | The foliowing was the fast work indulged in;-n lioyal Minstrel (H. Gilmer), out early whon tho atmosphere was not quite so light as later, did his once ronnd on tho plougli in 1.43, flnishing strongly but was not "puslied" along, On the course proper Pakanui (1, Briggs^ rattled off a mo'St impressive gallop wh'en 'getting to the end of live furlongs iu Gl^secs., good enough to win any sprint in the Dominion, as the trestles were out 24 feet over theix correct distances. Tho Huuting Hong horse has only to produce this form to gjveOratOry and company a big task ow Saturday in the open sprint. Mahutai (B. Stowe) was also sent on the course proper to register 1.18$ for the six, but being alone it was not surprising to giee hiin weakening a litflo over the last furlong. This gelding is on the improve, however. Colleen Gain (J. Walsh) did well to run her four iu 51secs., as she wau carrying over nine stone, and what is niore went off from a slow start. On the course proper the two stabloinates, Gironde (J. Forsyth) and Lindrum (J. Dooley), were paired over half a mile wheu the clock read SOsecs., which was a faxr gallop^ especially for the latter who has yet to win a race, There was nothing to choose between Oha (H, Gallinan) and Eoyal Epadcs (J. Walsh) over three furlongs in a txck under 40-secs., alboit Ona was liliishing the better, Lady Ghat (R. (Jolello), a rnost unlikeiy starter at the Hawke's Bay races on Saturday, was not bustled to run her live in OGsecs. There is nothing wrong with this handsome mare, but op account of ' the big field, it has been diflicult tp pbtain a suitable rider. A good thing wiU ahyays keep. On tho course proper the trestles were now moved in to their correct positiou, so that the times ^hould be a littio faster than thoso already chronicled. Maino (G. Cameron) alone got to the end of a round in 1.43, but was going easy througnout. She is to contest tho Spring Handicap in lieu of the Gloucester Cup. Eelicitation (B. Stowe) was well ahead of Marsyas (Irelaud) in what was supposed to be a working gallop. No timo was taken. Triplex (J. Forsyth) just shaded Fundy Bay (J. Dooley) in their run over Ixvo furlongs in 64^secs. Both finished well. Haille Selassie (C. Cameron) was sprinted a few furlongs to move well. Padiskak (J. Dooley) and Torquet (J. Forsyth) were gxven a working gallop over three furlongs, finishing abreast in 1.21$. Two Cup candidates in Daryili (U Berry) awd Tres Sec (J, Walsh) did well to register 1.42$ for once round. Trgs See went impressiveiy, and in the trophy ovent will be a force to reckou with, as h© up to the weight. On the course proper, Marehing Op (J. Forsyth), Anubis (T. Treacy), and Star Lad (J. Dooley) were abreast, but strung pcross the track when running ' half a mile in 50secs. A fair effoft. Journet and Tiger Gain were given a couple of rounds at solid pace work for botb to please when pulling up. There wa? little difierence between Parry (G. Plier) and Hamarin (H. Callahan) at the end of six furlongs run in l.lSf, although the latter may have finished the better. Geira (J. Forsyth), alone and on the course proper under restraint, registered 50$«ecs.*for four furlongs, A most impressiye gallop. Op the same track Jacynth (J. ToiIoy) and Brunhilde (J. Campbell) were together all the way over a simiJar distauce in SOjtsecs., for (Jacynth to finish the better as she wfts under a stropg lxold. This filly, perhaps the swectcst moyer in commxssion here, should soon be out of the novice class, Again the course proper was used when Flaxne Queen (B. Stowe), Tullamore (L. Culleu) and Tupai (J. Dooley) finished as na'med over half a mile in 50secs. Flame Queen was very quick to find her fcet, having the other pair olf their balance from the word "go." Thala (J. Forsyth) and Taro (J, Molloy), in taking 65secs. for live furlongs, did not record the tixne expccted^ but both were going easy throughout with Taro pullixig tho hardest passiug tho finishing post. Kahikatoa (H. CalJaban) and Helios (0. Plior) were paired pver threequarters of a mile, with the former finishing ahead in i,p, A fair eifort. Sweepalong (H. (Jilujer), on the course proper and frow p standing start, rau her half-jnile ip Gjjfsees,, fiet waa allowed to ease over th§ l&u t furlopg. - Trailer (J. Forsyth) and jjQQ Louis (U. Young) took Uc^sqctj. fqr fiyq furlongs, whicfi wa? very fgjf g§ peither was out fo nxpke tinxp. Alerciau I'rince (1. Briggs) ggd Qila (C. Shields) were tried pyf together over once round, The pajj- jiept toguther for tbe first Jlve furlongs when Merciati Prinee's eoudition bcgan to tcll and he run home an easy wiuner iu 1.44. The Spring Haudieap aeceplor, ilunting Cat (II. Callahan), did better than lio lias beon doing by galloping ouce round in 1.40$, being assisted hoxne the last live and a-half furlongs by Tomniy Atkius (J, Dooley). Mr Beatson's pair, Soho (H. Calla han) and Gletrac (d- Forsyth), attracted attention when stripped for their milton the course proper, but tbe trackwatchers were little the wiser, as neither was given their head to register 1.47 in. what proved only to be a working gallop.
