WELLINGTON, This Day. The following cablegram from Nanking has been received by the Chinese consul:— "Despite most severe fighting, the Chinese lines remain intact, "At Chapei, hand-to-hand fighting re peatedly drove back the Japanese,, Japanese tanks wero repulsed by Chinese machine-gunners and inf antry, who lept into the midst of the attackers and' threw hand-grenades With telling effect. The Ch?n,ese followed up by counter-attacks. "The Japanese bombed Chapei and Wuhu. Their attempt to bomb Nanking failed*"
