Mr. W. P. Miller, district traffic manager of railways at Wanganui since 1935, retired on superannuation on Saturday after 40 years' gervice. Mr. J* Dow, district engineer of railways at Invercargill, has been appointed to a similar position at Wanganui. Mr. Hope Gibbons, a former Mayor of Wanganui, celebrated his 81st birthday on Monday. Captain A. H, Fletcher, of Tauranga, has been appointed harbourmaster at Tauranga. There were 22 applicants for the position. Mr. J. Learmouth, formerly m charge of the Masterton gasworks, has been appointed as maxiager of the Palmerston North gasworks. Archbiskop Julius, who has been a leading figure in the Anglican Church of New Zehlhnd for more than 60 years, will celebrate his ninetietli birthday on October 15 Mr S. Blomlield, of Nelson, who has been clerk to the Waimea County Couucil for over 44 years, has been granted three months' leave of absence prior to retirement. Mr Raymond Common, Tomoana road, Hastings, has secured a position with the firm of Yates and Co., Sydney, and will sail on the Awatea which leaves Wellington on October 15. Mr R. Walker, a well-known resident of Waipukurau, has obtained a position in the railway workshops at Lower Hutt. Mr and Mrs Walker and daughtsr intend leaving Waipukurau by train on Friday. Lieutenants W. McKinnon and R. C. Quereet of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, returned to Auckland by the Aorangi from Sydney after taking a refreslier course with the Commonwealth Military Forces. Mr N. P, Grant, of Te Awamutu, who has been on the staff of the Public Trust Office, Dargaville, for the past 12 months, has arrived on transfer to the Napier office staff. Mr Grant is a New Zealand Varsity hockey blue. Major-General D. S. Skeltou, Director of Medical Services at Army heaclquarters, Simla, India, was" a through passenger for America and England by the Aorangi. He is due to retire as from next Monday, and it is his iutention to settle in England. Mr W. A. Sutherland, secretary of the Automobile Association (Wellington), will leave shortly for London in order to spend a month, at the invitatiou ot the Automobile Association, in studyiug its aetivities. Later he will inquire into the work of similar bodies in the United States. Mr I. S. Bartholomew, Edinburgh, is visiting the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mr Bartholomew, who is an active member of the Scottish Alpine Club, was for some months climbing in China before the commencement of hostilities From Mt. Cook Mr Bartholomew intends flying to the West Coast glaciers. Dr, A. G. Butter, formerly of the staff of the Napier Public Hospital, roccived the gold inedal awarded to tho candidate obtaining the highcst aggr«gate marks in the examination for the diploma of tropical medicine and hygiene. Dr. Butter is house surgeon at St. Bartholomew 's Hospital, Rochester. Mr J. B. Jackson, of the Public Works Department, who has been resident engineer of the Lewis Pass Road for the last two years, has been transferred to a similar position at Jacksou's Bay, South Westland, where a start will shortly be made with the constraction Of a harbour and the extension of the South Westland highway. Mr G. C. T. Smith, who has been on the clerical staif of the Public Works Department office at Napier for the past three and a-half years, has received notice of his transfer to take charge of the Okaihau, North Auckland, branch office of the department, aud will leave Napier this month to take over his new d.uties. He will be succeeded at the Napier office by Mr G. lv. Davis, of Auckland. Mr J. Flynn, who has relinquishcd control of tho Stortford Lodge Hotel, was inet by a number of residonts of that district on Saturday afternoon aiid made the xecipient of a presentation in token of the esteem in which he and Mrs Flynn are held. There were over 40 people, assembled, and' many tributes were paid to Mr and Mrs Flynn. On behalf of those present, Mr J. W. Martin presented Mr Flynn with a set of pipes and a tobacco pouch, and' Mrs Flynn with a pair of slippers. Several speakers endorsed the complimentary reference to the work of Mr and Mrs Flynn and to their good-fellowship.
