DOMINION LIVESTOCK
Record Cattle Total and More Sheep There was a record number of livastock in New Zeal^jad at the beginning of this year, according to the annual return of the Government Statistician. The total was 4,389,101 cattle, against 4,254,078 at the same time last year. The previous record was 4,301,128, in 1934. The total livestock this year included 1,935,524 dairy cows, comfSared with 1,951,507 in 1936. The Dominion had its higheat horse population in 1911, whenthere wero 400,000 in New Zealand. That total 1 ghrank to 272,986 in 1935, which 'was about the number at the beginning of the century. Last year the number increased to 276,170, and this year it has risen further to 277,799. An indication of the growtb of the industry is the fact that the. number of pigs in New Zealand has doubled in the past 13 years. The return this year was 802,419, a decrease of 6044 on the previous year's record total of 808,463. . ., Interim returns of sheep as at Apni 30 have already been published, and show a total of 31,305,818, which cxceeds the previous record number of 30,841,287, established in 1937. The figure last ydar was 30,113,704. The Auckland Province has by iar the greatest number of dairy cattle, its number of 616,066 being almost onethird of the Dominion total. Auckland also leads in the number of pigs> which at 277,513 also is approximately 6n^ third of the total. In the number oi horses, Auckland is second to Canterhury. Auckland is well down the list |in the number of ahebp.
