One of the chief aims of modern decoration is to eliminate as much unnecessary detail in the hom© as possible. Thus when you are deco.cating your lounge im the modern style, you should try and keep your scheme of decoration as simple as you can, and us© only really useful and necessary lurniture. Many rooms are ruined by overcrowdmg. As the living-room will naturally be used a great tieal, it is best to choose a cheerful yet, restful scheme for its decoration. Light apple green and prunrosc yellow were th'e predoniinatiug colours chosen ior a very attractive lounge I saw recently, says a jvriter in the "Cape Thnes." The walis and ceiling were washed with a light apple green distemper, and the doors and woodwork were finished in a flat paint of the same shade. Distemper is particularly suited to modern rooms as it gives the walls a dull smooth surface which makes an admirable background for modern furniture, and has the additional advantage of being inexpensivo and easily renewed. The floor was strained a rich dark brown and covered with several rugs of modern design. The curtains linked up the two chief colours, light green and yellow. Simple square-shaped, comfortable armcliairs, with a settee to match, were covered in the same material as the curtains, with two or three extra easy cliairs with loose covers of plain light golden-yellow. A low modern combination book-case table and a tea table withi an extra shelf were finished in flat yellow paint. A few well-chosen pieces of pottery and glass furnished supplementary notes of colour, and each time I have seen the room, it was embeHished with bowls of fiowers chosen espeeially to lit info iJ?SL,general qojbjur, gcheffip. 4
