PRESENTATION MADE TO MISS M.E. COMPTON

A pleasant event took place alter closing time on Thursday, when Miss M. E. Compton, who has resigned from the stalf of Messrs. W. Hannah and Oo. after 31 years' service, was presented with a handsome liand-bag. Mr. A. Mathews, in making the presentation on behalf of the Hastings staff , referred feelingly to Miss Compton' s long and loyal service and said that not only the staff, but many old customersi of tho firm would deeply regret her leaving. He thanked Miss Compton for her willing co-operation in all that affected the interests of the firm and 'offered her all good wishes foi her future. Miss Newton added a few words on behalf of the junior members, saying that it had always been a pleasure to them all to work with Miss Compton, who had always been most kind and heJpful in every way. Miss Compton, who was deeply touched by the surprise gift, expressed her sincere thanks to all for their lcind thouglit, and bid them goodbye, so far as business was concerued, and tho pleasant little gatlxering then dispersed.
