RANDWICK RACES Sir Regent Wins the Metropolitan VERDICT BY A HEAD
(Bs TelQgraph-

SYDNEY, October 4. Ideal weather prevailed for the second day of tho spring mceting at Randwick. The track was in splendid eondition despite rough usage on Saturday. The attendance was exccllent. Beechwood won the opening event comfortably. He was nicely placed in the early stages and, dashing to the front passing the Leger, soon placed the issue beyond doubt. The Iliad colt Miltiades was instailed warm favourite in the Breeders' Piate but gave an inglorious display. Se was well favoured by the start and quickly established several lengths lead and appeared likfely to race away from the field but weakcned suddenly at the top of the straight, where Pavdava moved up smartly to take the lead and was not troubied thereafter. The Lim'jnd colt Limulet finishod resciutelv and might have seriously worried the winner but for interference at the barrier, which the jockey, Wilson, claimed was caused by McCarten on Pavdava. A protest was lodged accordingly but was dismissed. The Posterity colt Mosaic and the Hunting 8ong colt Chasseur both ran indifferently in this race. A thrilling finish was provided in tho Metropolitan. The favourite, Silvcr Standard, enjoyed an ideal run throughout and was always handy to the leadjrs. He appeared likely to race past 3ir Regent, who held cominand at the listance, but the Chief Ruler gelding ;allantly responded when asked for a iurther effort by Jockey O'Sullivan, dnally gaining the verdict by a head. Old Rowley was i'Qurth, then came Tapestry, Maia, Pugitive, Fireman, Mestoraven, Gay Knight and Young Crusader. Maia rau an even race in the middlo of the field without looking dangerous at any stagc.
Munro, the rider of Silver tstanaara, said Sir Regent was just too good at the weights. McCarten said Maia faded in the run home. Wilson, the rider of Prittle Prattle, said his niount jumped sideways at the barrier and nearly unseated him. He never felt Jike catching the leaders after tha-fc. Other jockeys declared there was an entire absenee of interference during the rnp.ning of the Metropolitan. Heroie Faith provided a measure of compensation for Dalton, the trainer . of Silver Standard, by a brilliant victory in the Centenaial Park Handicap. Dashing to the front at the barrier rise, he was not afterwards headed. Rival Hit, although dangerous at one stage, fmished ninth. Valbeau, winner of the Grantham Stakes, is a Newcnstle four-ycar-old horse by .Yaliard — Beau Soult. He has uow had i'our successive wins and is regarded as one of the most promising in Australia. Gold Rod's winnings are now £14,015. Lough Neagh is approaching the £20,000 inark. Mr Alan Cooper, ov/ner of Maia and Talking, was called before the stewards in reference to a statement which appeared in Saturday 's Sydney papers alleged to have been made by him in reference to the lack of control of racing in Sydney. Mr' Cooper flatly denied having made the statement. .. , Results: — THE SHORTS HANDICAP. Of £800 ; 6 fursongs.
