A Japanese telegram states that 130,000 Chinese are massing in North Ohina and are reorganising under Marshal Chiang Kai-shek's ordcrs to hold the Japanese at all costs under the supervision of General Cheng Chien, Marshal Chiang Kai-shek's chief of staff. Nanking reports that the Chinese eneircled 1000 Japanese 50 miles south of Tientsin. The Japanese farther south captured Techow. The Chinese garrison of 60,000 retreated by boat down the Grand Canal, the swift Japanese advance having foiled their defensive efforts. Japanese advancing from Paotingfu seized Chuyang. According to a message from Shanghai, the Chinese declare that they have taken measures to nullify the Japanese penetration of the "Iron Bolt. " The front as a whole remains lirru. Terrific street fighting rages at Chapei, where the Japanese are trying to reach the North Station. Eight hundred Japanese are said to be dead or dying in the streets and alleyways. Others are trapped in burning buildings. The Japanese are maintaining severe shelling in the Kaingwan sector. They bombed Chinese warships in the Yungan estuary and claim to have damaged a gunboat, a torpedo boat and a stranded cruiser.
