(By Tplr'.rmrh
HAMIL9QN, Last Night. By defeating A. J. Shaw and E. J. Moss in a thrillmg play-off at Hamilton John Hornabrook, the amateur title-holder and a member of the Manawatu Golf Clubj won the 1937 open championship of New Zealand. It was a wonderful performance on Hornabrook' s part for he w;as pitted against two of the finest professionals in the land. ■ Alex Murrays the young professional from Auckland, who won the open title at Shirley a couple of years agjo, recorded two cards of 72 on Saturday, and this gave him an aggregate of 297 — two strokes ahead of Hornabrook, Shaw and Moss — but he transgressed one of the rules of golf duringj his afternoon round, and was disqualified by the tournament committee. In addition to the open championship Hornabrook wins the BlOdisloe Cup, which goes to the amateur returning the !)•'«(■ iom- cards in the open. The final scores in the open were as under:—
Better forra was shown by Basil Smith Junior, who returned a steady 75. From tees and on the greens he played well, his only blunder being at the 13th where he missed an easy puto for the bogey, otherwise he was round in par figures. K. Ross, though he carded three sixes when fours would have been more in Jieeping with the standard of his play, returned a 78. A. H. Dyke again disappointed with an 80 and I. A. Ewen a 78, slipping strokes due malnly to. bunker trouble. The luck again was against A. J. Shaw all the way round. He returned a 74 but deserved a 70. Particularly on '.the greens the luck was against hiin for putts lipped or jumped out of the cup at least four times in the course ,of the round. He just missed a 40footer for a two at the first. At the eighth a 20-footer just baulked the cup, and a putt for a three at the tenth bounced ont of the cup. He missed a two-foot putt at the 14th. Silk's putting on the other hand was good. On the greens he was sinking 12 and 14 foot putts for birdie and bogey iigures in a llne third round of 72. Only at the 17th did he strike trouble, being bunkered there and too hard with an explosion shot, taking six for the holo. Thompson'a Good Fomi. the third round Giiy and Thomson, who went out together, were on terms at the tcirn, and they took 40 and 37 respectively for the homeward journey. j Thomson was playing * excellent golf, driving and chipping well and also malcing a nice recovery from the rough at the seventh. Coming home he was inclined to be short with his putts but flnished the last nine holes with only one over par. Guy did not start o£E too well, his drives frequently finding the rough, and his 78 rather spoilt his two previous rounds of 73 and 75. Anxiou3 about his chancos for qual/.fying for tbo amateur championsh'R, Max Smith/ tlis brillian!; j ou»jf Aka
rana player, went out for his third 1 round determined to play to his true form. He accomplished this and in playing a fine round of 72 he overcame his trouble of two earlier rounds when he was blundering badly on nearly every green. In the third round he reached the green in 2's nearly every time and his card read: Out: 34364464 4—37 , In: 34533644 4—35 Total 72 Another young star arosa in K. 0. Ward, the Akarana piayer, who will be celebrating his nineteenth. birthday just after the tournament concludes. His round of 77 to-day whs a good effort and after being well up on the list at the end of the first three rounds he should be better known in Dominiou golfing circles. His game is steadily improving and with a likelrhood of attaining plenty of power in the neai future he must be reckoned among the best of the Auckland players. H. W. Hattersley, the Anstralian. was again in better fettle for the final round of the open when he returned another card of 72. His form on his last two rounds was indicative of the fact that he was definitely off his game in the earlier rounds. He made praetieally no mistakes in his last round and at every hole kept his figures below 5's and on four occasions only did he exceed the scratch allowance. Hattersley now appears to have mastered the 14th hole (bogey 3) and in the fourth round he collected a birdie there. Hornabrook 's Luck was "Not So Good." Hornabrook experienced a little bad luck during his round with Alex Murray and his partner had a card of one stroke better than his, which showed 74. Long putts accounted for Hornabrook 's few failures as his iron shots and woods were particularly good. Murray, after a good. putt at the third, holed in three. At last mastering the conditions prevailing in the Dominion, the ex-Aus-tralian and New South Wales champion, H. W. Hattersley, showed something of his true worth in the third round when he« bettered bogey by two strokes and returned to the clubhouse with a score of 72. Hattersley had disappointed in the earlier rounds bnt to those who saw his game to-day it was evident that he deserved better succesa earlier in the competition. Moss Lost His Brilliance in Third Round. Still with the honours his at the end of the third round, E. J. Moss was nol in his brilliant form of the secono round to-day when his third figure was 75. He was perhaps lucky to keep the tally down as low as it was by overcoming loose seconds. Horne "Sets it Alight." With long tee shots and well controlled short work and then playing the' most brilliant; homeward journey inthe tournament so far, W. G. Horne/ the scratch Hutt player, set a cracking pace for the fourth round when he fin'ished in 71. At the first hole he started off in confident manner by blasting J a bunkered tee shot on to the green for j a well recovered three. At the fourth he chipped neatly out of another bunker and at the sixth and seventh also recovered well after tripping bunkera At the 10th he opened his homeward scoring in brilliant manner by holing his second stroke right from the edge of the extensive green. Two on and two down at the noxt kept him ahead of par and a beautifully judged chip at the 12th enabled him to keep on toj bogey and to sink his third stroke at the tricky 13th was masterly work. A! mediocre five at the last hole was the result of a misjudged second which pitched short. Shaw Recovered His True Form. Striving hard to overcome his mediocre form oi the earlier rounds, A. J. Shaw recovered something of his old style in the fourth round when he ilnished with an excellent card of 72, which gives him an aggregate of 299. It was again the greens which deprived Shaw of sensational figures and repeatedly he was just slightly off the line to the cup. From the tees he was brilliant to-day, gaining tremendous length with seldom a deviation from the line. His seconds were nearly perfeet also and repeatedly his approach«s >;tched pin high. His card rtv^:- - Out: 3545434 4 4—36 In : 34453445 4—36 ' Total 72 E. J. Moss, who was leading the field at the end of three rounds, slipped in the fourth round and returned a card of 78, making his aggregate 299.
