SUNBURN COSTS £260.000 A YEAR
Every year sunbum costs the world at least £280,000. This bill is ca-used by the loss of 200,000 working days due to over-indulgence in sunbathing. Startling though these figures seem^ they are given as strietly apcurate by Dr. Charles F. Pabst, chief dermatologist of Greenpoint Hospital, Brooklyn, New York. He is a crusader against reekless sunbathing, which may lead to serious illnesses and even to death. He has sent me a pamphlet called "Tan Commandments, " in which ha lays down explieit .direetions for avoiding danger. The pamphlet shows that a rainy day is the best weather for blondeg and redheads — a brunette prefers the sun. Blondes and redheads are "heliophobes," the .doctor explains. They burn, but do not tan, and they feel blue and depressed on bright, sunny days. On the other hand, "heiiophiles" (brunettes) tan almost as soon as the sun strikes them, and they are likely to be vivacious and gay in the summer sunlight. Dr, Pabst 's "Taxi Commandments" are as follows: — (1) Acquire a coat of tan, provided you are not a heliophobe, by means of short exposures. (2) Do not sleep on the beach in the direct rays of the sun. (3)Don't sit in the sun when the body is wet after bathing. (4) Don't go bareheaded in strong sunlight. (5) Don't read books or play cards Ln the direct rays of the sun. (6) Don't drink strong liquor wkile xxposed in the summer sun; aicohol and sun do not mix. (7) Don't sprinkle perfume on the skin before exposure to the sun; a aepere infiammation of. the skin may re* jult. (8) Don't rocliiie in strong sunlight i ifter strenuous exercise. I (9) Don't forget that blondes and j xrunettes react difcerently to the sun's •'ays; blondes burn more easily. (10) If your skin will redden, blis;er, and burn, bnt never tan, you are a xeliophobe, and should not expose yourielf, as every new exposure meahs a iew burn.
