Italian and German Alliance

"NOTHING TO HIDE" Any Western Pact Would be on Dictators' Terms EXPANSIONIST AIMS

(By Telegraph-

(Eeceived 2, 8.45 a.m.) EOME, Oct. 1. It is officiaUy announced that Hevr Hitler has accepted Signor Mussolini's invitation to visit ifcdy, bixt no date has been mentioned. A message from London states: "The outward appearance at least of Signor Mussolini's visit to Germany has been an unqualified success," declares the Berlin correspondent of The Times. "11 Duce was not allowed to escape for a single moment the atmosphere of mass enthusiasm which was more overpowering than any which the Nazis, who are past masters in political stagecraft, have previously achieved. "It is insisted in Berlin that the dictators have nothing to hide. The ItaloGerman alliance is described as a coxuradeship not directed against any nation, but it is clear that the inclusion of ■ France and Britian depends on their recognition of Germany 's colonial claims, Italian interests in the Mediterranean and the acceptaxxce of the dictators' belief in the Bolshevist menace and recognition of their position as guardians of European civilisaton. "This means that Britain and France cannot expect Italy and Germany to accept a western pact except on the terms of the dictators. Italy and Germany demand room for Germany to expand in Europe and elsewhere, and equality and security for Italy. "Whether their course is rxght they cannot alford to retreat without inflict-. ing a blow to Fascxst prestige which might well shake tho internal popularity of the regimes," concludes the correspondent. The Diplomatische Korrespondenz bluntly threatens those nations con- . tinuing to misunderstand, and says that Italy and Germany will carefully remember.
