FINE SLOW BOWLER
retirement of j. c. white ' J. C. White, Somerset's former lefthand bowler, has retired from firstclass cricket at the age of 45. He will ,be remembered as an untiring, accurate slow bowler, and a member of Chapman's .tearn in Australia in" 1928-29. He was the Englishmen's mainstay with the bail during the tour, his deceptive flight, accuracy of length, and remarkable' stamina enabiing him to subdue Australia's best batsmen, who never really collared him. He kept the creases for long periods,. another instance of a man being a better bowler on Australian wickets than on those of his native land. White's Test figures in Australia were 397.4 overs, 134 maidens, 760 runs, 25 wickets, at an average of 30.40. He made only one visit to Australia, and it was a 'memorable one, accentuated, apart from his bowling, by the fact that Don Bradman and Archie Jackson made their debut in Test cricket in that season. In the fourth Test, at Adelaide, which England won by the narrow margin of 12 runs, White sent down in the second innings 64.5 overs, for 21 maidens, 126 runs, and 8 wickets — a remarkable feat of skill and endurance in that marathon match in February heat. In his first Test — the fourth of the series, at Adelaide — Jackson, by a glorious display of brilliant and graceful batting was out l.b.w. to White for the great score of 164; with Bradman making centuries in Melbourne in the third and fifth Tests of the tour, his respective figures being 112 and 123.
