Smith Wins First Round MISS BETTS GOOD SCORE Play yesterday afternoon at "Waiohiki where the New Zealand golf championships are being decided was confined to the first bogey handicap and the first round of the Rattray Cup. Play took place under varying conditions of rain and wind squalls and sunshine. The first division' resulted in a tie between Miss O. Smith, Napier (8), and Miss J. Betts, Nelson (2), with three up. Miss Smith won on the count-back over the last nine holes. The second division Tesulted in a triple tie, Miss J. Clark, Napier (11). Mrs A. O. Wellwood, Christchurch (12), and Miss K. O'Sullivan, Hawera (11), all returning cards of four down. Miss Clark won on the count-back. "«l The medal round of Miss J. Betts (2), of Nelson, ran out at 78 after getting into bunkers at the seventeenth and eigliteenth holes, both of which cost her a five. Many people aro under the impression that a charge of 2/6 is- being made for - admittance to the course, but this does not come into operation until the last three days, Wednesday; Thursday and Friday of next week. The Tasman Cup contest between the team of Australian ladies and the New Zealand team. is tset for Wednesday, the semi-final of the championship on Thursday and the final over 36 holes on Friday.
