TITLES Two Australians Beaten first-round play Misses Wray & Cheney Down to N.Z. Players this morning's games The defeat of two of the visitlng Australian lady golfers at the hands of New Zealand players was the outstanding feature of the flrst round of the New Zealand ladies' amateur golf championship which was played at Waiohiki this morning under conditions which wero prevented froin keing perfect "by occasional periods of gusty Wind. The iwo Austtalian golfers who wero beaten were Misses I/. "Wray and B. Cheney, who fell victims to Mrs F ■ McFadyen (Poverty. Bay) and Miss I. Seifert (Manawata) tosJtoctively.' Buchanan (Christchurch), 1 up* Mrs Fullerton Smith boat Mrs L. E. Gurtis by the limit 10/8. She finished the first half in par figures 37, and at the "10th was lying on the lip of a bunher for her second. She played safe to the top of the green and hoied for 5 to 0 to end the match. Her out figures were; 45 4* 43435 5—37, with birdies M the third and hfth. The match between Miss Kernot andi Mrg. Latham was rather one-sided f«'_ the first half, as the former was fn>3 t® at the turn and six up at the 10th , i Mr» Latham then improved and won back thxee holes, but she lost the 16th god the match by 4 and 2. •fcfisg Horwell beat Mrs Hutchinson by 1 up after an even match all round. The score was all square at the 16th, the 17th was halved for Miss Horwell to win the 18th and the match. Miss "White Parsons won the match over Mrs Hall Jones at the 16th by 3 and 2. Betts had a comfortable win over Mrs Bota, being 3 np at the turn after being all square at the third. Miss Betts played steadily to end the game at the 14th by 5 and 4. Mrs McKillop, a member of the South Ialand teanx yesterday, had an easy win over Miss Jefferd by 6 and 5. Mts McKillop had the upper hand throughont> as at the ninth she was 5 and 4 and finished the match offi at the 13th. Miss Jefferd had lapses at putting that cost her holes. Mrs McFadyen had a win over Miss "Wray, the managere&s of the Australian team, by two up and oue lo play. ' At one stage Mrs McFadyen was three up, bat then the game evened somewhat. Mrs MeFadjen was very sounu on Ihe green?, to which she owes her win. Miss Tolhurst defeated Miss Smith by 2 and 1. She was dormy one approaehing the eightcenth, where Miss Saiith found a bunker, mSking a sensational shot out to land on the roof of the club-house and out of bounds tb lose the hole and the match. Miss Wilson had a comfortable win over Mrs Crerar, by 6 and 5. Mts Crerar won the third hole and was one up at the fiftb. Then Miss Wilson scored ilve bogey figures in a row to staud 4 np at the tentli. The eieventh was halved, and Mrs Wilson again reeording bogey founs at the 12th and 13th kiushed the match at that point. Mjre Fleming had an easy win over her epponent, Miss Lueas, who was playing much below her usual standard. The game finished at the eleveath S and 7 in Miss Fleming 's favour. Mrs. Foreman won her match with Miss O'Kane after a very even. game. They wero all square up to the 16th, * wbere Miss O'Kane, in putting, knocked Mrs. Foreman's ball into the hole for the' latter to win. The 17th and 18th were halved in threes and fives, so was -the misfortnno that lost Miss i O'Kane the match. Mrs, "Wilson won from Mrs. Tareha ; by 1 up. Facli had three wins to be all square at the 9th. Mrs. Tareha won the 10th, then Mrs. Wilson won thtree W a row to stand 2 up. The 14th and pth were halved. but Mrs. Tareha won ■fce 16th and 17th to iMUjx the game, fwhdh was finished where fcyjlnrs. Wilson scored

the 'two ihe 10th, then Holes in a row to even up again by winning the 15th and 16th. Miss Smith won the 17th, and Mrs. Slater the 18th. At the 19th Mrs. Slater scored a win 4 and 5 and won. Miss J. Duncan. (Wanganui) beat Mis B. Rutherford (Harwarden) 1 up. Miss Duncan won five holes in the first half against two wins by Miss Rutherford to stand three up at the turn. The tenth was won by Miss Duncan. A half preceded two wins to Miss Rutherford, who halved the next two holes before winning the sixteenth, but the lasi two holes were halved to leave Miss Duncah 1 up. Mrs. N. Hawkes (Timaru) beat Miss D. Todd (Masterton) 2 up. Mrs. Hawkes was two up at the ninth, her medal figures being 42. She went on well in the second half to be three up at the sixteenth, but lost the next '3 to 4. Miss Todd was playiug good fairway shots but found trouble jn several bunkers which accounted for her downfall. Miss 0. Smith (Napier) had a somewhat easy win over Mrs. A. Marshall (Marton) by 4 and 3. The latter was not playing up to her usual form and could not get going properly. Miss 3. Seifert( Manawatu) beat Miss B. Cheney (Eastern Australia) by two up. Miss Cheney played the better in the first half to turn one up and also win fhe tenth. Miss Seifert won the next and a half followed, but another win. for Miss Seifert. 1 The 14th was halved in threes and the game was all square/ Miss Cheney won the 15th but lost the last three holes to Miss Seifert to end the game two up. Miss E. M. Upton (Auckland) beat Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) by 1 up. They were all square at the ninth and again at the 12th. Miss Buchanan won the next and the 15th, after halving the 14th. Miss Upton then won the last three holes in the row to finish 1 up.
