(Eecveived 1, 8.45 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept, 29. ,Tho interim report of ihe committee on broadcasting ih the colonies ,emphasises the importance of colonia. Governme'nts taking all practical steps to encourage increased reception of tho British Broadcasting Gorporation's Empire services, The report discusses the advantages and possibilities of broadcasting and the system's re-dift'usion by wire in relation to varying local needs in different colonial areas and within each and haying regard to the findncial difficulties.
The committee expresses the opinioa that, while it. would regret. to see an extensive development of advertisements as a feature of colonial broadcasting programmes, it is better to have a broadcasting system partially financed by sponsored programmes or advertisements than no broadcasting system at all. The social and economio conditions in most colonifH territories dispose the committee to take the view that broadcasting for entertainment should be self-supporting. The report foresees the possibility of interesting developments, and in this connection attohtion is called to Ihe advantages of pronioting community IistCning. ^ ,
