Chronological List of Important Dates FROM 1773 TO 1912 A chronological list of important dates in the history of Hawke's Bay, which, it was suggested, could be ampliiied as part of the research work oi the Hawke's Bay historical committee in connection with the New Zealand Centennial in 1940, was. placed before a meeting in Napier yesterday by Mr E. H. McCormick, secretary of the National Historical Committee. Mr McCormick stated that it had been found in many instances, however, that dates in past history were inaccurate, but suggested the list as a basis for a fuller one. ... Eollowiug is a tentative list: — 1773, October 21: William Bayly m "Adventure" sighted Hawke's Bay. (R. McNab; "Historical Reoords. of New Zealand," 1914, Vol. 11, p. 210). 1840, June 25: Major Bunbury arrived at Hawke's Bay with a draft of tlie Treaty of Waitangi. (W. Dinwiddie, "Old Hawke's Bay," 1921, Part 11, P18; T. Lindsay Buick, "Treaty of Wai-, tangi," third edition, p. 253). _ 1845, January 5: Wm. Colenso held his first service at Ahuriri. (W . Dinwiddie, op. cit., Part 1, p. ll) 1850, December 14: Principal Maon chiefs from Ahuriri agreed at a publio meeting to sell a tfact of land to Sir Donald McLean. (Appendices to the journals of the House of Representatives, 1862; Report of the Land Purchase Department relative to the extinguishment of nat-ive title in completion of papers presented, 14th. June, 1861, p. 307). 1851, July 9: Sir Donald McLean wrote to the Colonial Secretary, Wellington, rdporting purchase of Ahuriri Block, Te Hapuka Block, and Mohaka Block, a total of 700,000 acres for £7,100. (Appendices to journals of House ot Representatives, 1862). 1855, April 5, Eirst sale of Napier sections held. (W. Dinwiddie, op. cit. Part 11, p. 19). 1855, May 2, the Salopian was the first vessel to enter and cdear from tho port of Napier. (W. Dinwiddie op. cit. Part 11, p. 21). 1858, Nov. 1, Hawke's Bay establisked as provinee; Napier established as capital of Hawke's Bay provinee. (N.Z. Gazette, Order in Council, published on November 3, 1858, No. 28, • p. 136—37). 1859, April 23. First sitting of the Hawke's Bay Provincial Council (Hawke's Bay Provincial Council minutes 1— IV, 1859—62; Archives of N.Z. Accession No. llo (H.B. /30). (Note: W. Dinwiddie op. cit. Pt 11 6. 26 states that " »*., che days of the Provincial Govefnment, which lasted from A)?ril 25, 1857, when the Hawke's Bay Provincial Council held its first sitting), — -1872, October 14 : Dannevirke founded by Seandinavians. (Letter — Friberg to Ormond, December 5, 1873), 1874, November ,18: Announcement of first land saies at Woodville (Hawke's Bay Provincial Gazette, November 18, 1874), 1874, November 26: Borough of Napier founded (N.Z. Gazette 1874, p. 810). 1876. November 1 : Wairoa Uounty created (T. Lambert "Story of Old Wairoa," p. xii). - 1884, January 2: Hastings constituted a town district (N.Z. Gazette 1884, P. 40). 1884, January 24: Waipawa constituted a town district (do. p. 189). 1885, September 17: Dannevirke constituted a town district (do 1885, p. 1053). 1886, Augusfc 19: Hastings cqnstituted a borough (do. . 1886, p. 986). 1892. November 10: Dannevirke con"eftifelted a' borough (do. 1892, p. 1487). 1908, ApiiTT : constituted a borough (do. Waipawa CcTulA.v Act, 1907, sect. 8). 1912, September 12: Waipukurau constituted a borough (do. 1912, p. 2692).
