Our Own Correspondent;
Waipawa's Scheme to Prevent Drift to Larger Towns
From
WAIPAWA, Last Night. At last month's meeting of the Waipawa Chamber of Commerce® a scheme was formulated with the.idea of keeping trade within the town, -and it was then decided to invite business houses *to bo represented at tlie chamber's next meeting. The outeome of this was that there was a large representation at last night' s meeting, when the president, Mr F. Tickner, diseussed the drift of trade to the larger towns, due mainly, he said, to the ready aecessability of modern methods of transport. A proposal had been' sub'mitted at the last meeting of the Chamber, he said, but consideration had been held over for discussion at a more representative gathering. An invitation to attend this meeting had. been extended to ' all business people, and he was pleased to see sueh a large attendance. The business to be diseussed was of interest to all shopkeepers, and he invited a full and free discussion, so that, as a result of the deliberations, it might be possible to furnish the shopping public with the facilities they demanded. Only by a eo-operation of all business people could a solution be found for the problems facing them to-day. v After a lengthy discussion, taken in committee, a scheme introduced by Mr W. M. Murray was adopted, and the foliowing sqh-committee appointed. to further the matter: Messrs F. Eagje, H. T. Limbriek, F. Adeane and W. M. Murray. The lnpmber of Parliament for the district, Mr H. M. Christie, is to be approaelied to ascertain what progress has been made towards the introduction of a'universal half-holiday. Mr Limbriek said it was pleasing to see sueh a large attendance at the meeting, and the interest shown in the discussion. As individuals it migiht not be possible to do much, but collectively a great deal would be aoeomplished. The thanks of the Chamber were conveyed to Mr Murray for his vvork in preparing the scheme plaeed before ihe meeting.
