* N.Z. Championships Open at Waiohiki INTER-ISLAND MATCH The New Zealand ladies' golf championship opened at the Napier Golf Club's links at Waiohiki this morning in fing but dull ■ weather . . The playing conditions were perfect during the first half but a strong blustering westerly 6prang up half-way through the morning, making conditions very unpleasant for the players. Tho principal event of fche day was the North v. South Jsland lixture, which was completed by noon, the South winning five matches to three. The number-one players were Mrs. G. Hollis, Hawera, who plays off a plus-one handicap, and Miss E. WhdteParsons, Christchurch, the present champion, who is on an eight handicap. Mrs. Hollis, who was playing great golf, bad an easy win by six up and dve toplay. She completed the first nine holes in 40 and the last four holes of the match in 20. A feature of the match was the long, straiglit driving of Mrs. Hollis. The second match was between Mrs. R. S. Fullerton Smith, Marton, and Miss V. Fleming, Christchurch. This match was very evenly contested over the first half, the game being all squaro at the turn, where Miss Fleming sank a nice 12-foot putt for a half. Miss Fleming took the lead at the 11th, which she won.in five to six. The next hole was halved, and Miss Fleming gained another hole at -the return in four to five, making lier two up and five to play. Mrs. Fullerton Smith won the 14th three to .five, but the next went to Miss Fleming in' four to .five, and the 16th being halved," the game stood dormy two for Miss Fleming, who won the 17th and tlie match in tlireo up and one to play. Tlie third pair were Miss P. Helean, Hastings, and Miss J.Horwell, Timaru. Miss Helean had trouble with the big tree at the first hole which she lnst three to five, but won- the second in four to five, again to suffer a loss at the Ridge, No. 3, and also at the next. The fiftli was halved, biit tlie sixth was won by Miss Horv/ell with a nicely piayed four which gave her a lead of three up. Tlie next hole, The Short, was halved in threes and ten Miss Helean won iwo holes in succession to stand one down at the turn. Three holes were then halved, but Miss Horwell won the 13th to inake her two up. The 14th was halved in threes, while bhe 16th went to Miss llorwell in four to five, when she stood dormy three The eud came at the 16th which was halved in fives, Miss Honvell winning by three and two. The fourth game was between. Mrs. J. M. Alison, Titirangi, and Miss J. Betts, Nelson, and was won by the forwer by four and two. Miss Befcts was not playing comfortably in the first half and was three down at the turn. The first four holes of ihe second half were halved. Tiien each won a hole and the 16th was finished in a half to end the game. Mrs. Alison piayed with eonfidence around tlie greens, and luck standing to her, she holed several approaches and long putts. The game between Mrs. D. Crisp, Poverty Bay, and Miss B. Rutherford, Hawarden, was fairly even over the first nine holes, Miss Rutherford turning one up. She then won the next two holes to stand three up. The next thre© were halved and Miss Rutherford, winning the 15th, clinched the match by four up aiid three to go. Miss H. Buchanan, Christchurch, beat Mrs Foremany Miramar, by three up and one to play. After being two up at the turn, the game was very even, to be still in the same position at the 16th. The "end came at the seventeenth, whicb Miss Buchanan won by three to four. Miss J. Duncan, Wanganui, beat Miss M. Beadel, Christchurch, by three and cne after being tliree up at the ninth. Thereon- the game s-ee-sawed to stand clorniy two to Miss Duncan at the sixteenth, where Miss Beudel sank a twelve-foot put to keep the game alive. The seventeenth went to Miss Duncan three to four and tke game three and oue. Mrs A. C. MeKillop, Christchurch, won her ganie from Mrs Slater, Hutt, by tivo and one. At the turn Mr^ MeKillop stood oue up and the game was evenly contested to the sixteenth, where Mrs Slater found a bunker and failed to get out with her first, the hole gomg to Mr MeKillop to make her aormy two. The 17th was halved for the South to gain the last game and the aggregate of five to three over the eJght games. Following are the details of the play: INTER-ISLAND MATCH Mrs G.
