RUGBY QUEEN CROWNED AT COLOURFUL WAIPUKURAU BALL
The Municipal Theatre, Waipukurau, presented a magnificent sight on Monday nigiht, when the Central Hawke's Bay Rugby Sub-TJnion Carnival was brouglit to a close and "the winning candidate in the Queen carnival was crowned queen. The gallery was com*-. pletely filled with onlookers, and i-r floor of the hall there was very little room. Soon after 9 o'clock the stage curtain was drawn back to reveal a throne in the centre of the stage, a trumpet blast by the herald, Mr E. Erwin, sigjnified that the event was about to commence. Two smail heralds, Trevor Grant and Forbes McKenzie, clad in suits of cream satin, then appeared leading the procession from the back of the hall on to the stage. Then followed the five maids-in-waiting eacli with her small retinue, The maids-in-waiting were : Miss Leoni Roach, who was gowned in cream and red floral French crepe, Miss Lorna Edgecombe} gjraceful in daffodil chiffon ; Miss Shirley Clay, dainty in pink lloral taffeta ; Miss Myrtle Baker, jiale pink and silver threaded cotelle prettily shirred; and Miss Mary McHardy, in pale blue self-pat-terned cloque with roses on corsage. I The small attendance, who were all wear Juliet frocks of cream satin, with silver girdles, were Norma Wilson, Margaret Smith, Mania Phillip, Joan Larsen, Joyce White, Valda Cassidy, Ngaire Williams, Pat Frederickson, Ngaire Hill, Louis Brownina, Yalerie Coughlan, Thelma Spotswood, Beveriey Dowrick, Isobel Ledgewood, Beryl Gay, Beveriey Gardner. They took their places on the stage grpuped at each side of the throne, and then the queen, Miss Jacquelilxe Ormond entered irnid excitement. She was regal in white satin with her robe of scarle.t velvet edged with ermine. Her attendant was hrances Hope, who wore a Juliet frock of white, satin with a silver girdie and her page boys Thomas and Jeremy Hope, were attired in cream satin suits with capes of scarlet satin. Her herald, Alex Pearce, wore a suit of blue and cream satin and- a cap with a sweeping feather. On her arrival at the throne, the queen was proceeded by her Lord Chancellor, Mr C. M. Williamson, attired aecording to his high office.- Onher arrival at the throne the Oueen was present'A with her vestments oi office, and the chancellor, with due ceremony, placed the crown on her head, naming her Queen of the Land oi Rugby. Each maid' in waiting then paid homage to their queen and curtsied before the throne. The chancellor called out the names of several people who had helped with the carnival and in turn they were presented "to the queen and honoured with titles. After numerous floral bouquets had been presented to the queen and maids of honour, Mr A. McCormick, chairman of the Central Hawke's Bay Rugby. Sub-Union, thanked most heartily those who had acted as queen candidates, not forgetting their supporters. !'We, would not like the carnival to end without these young ladies having some token of remembrance," he said. "I , will ask them to accept a small present." Presentations oi ctystal boudoir sets were thereupon made by Mrs McCormick to the six candidates. For his energetic services Mr "S. Peterkin was presented with a silver cigarette case. Tq Mrs R. O. Bousfield, who deserved credit for the present function, a presentation of a : beautiful bouquet was made. Mr Alex Kirkpatrick, of Hastings, the sub-union's representative on tlie Hawke's, Bay Rugby Union, was then introduced by Mr McCormick, and expressed the union' s congratulations, calling for cheers for the queen. The dance which followed was a very jolly one, excellent dance music being played by Les. Henry's orcbestra. The dance hall was appropriately decorated with red, white and blue streamers, siinilar decorations being used in the supper room intemingled with bowls of spring flowers. The excellent organisations were carried out by Mrs R. 0. Bousfield, who was assisted by Mesdames H. Peacock, J. A. McLeari, V. Bradley. Misses S. McLauchlan, J. Ormond, D. Bousfield, A. Wilder, Messrs S G. Peterkins, C. M. William-. son, A. L McCormick, S. Southerwood, VV. G. Gaston, R. Inglis. The coronation ceremony was produced by Mrs W. G. McKenzie, to whom great credit is due. Prior to the dance Mr and Mrs A. L. McCormick entertained representatives of the Rugby Union and their wives to dinner, Other hostesses at dinner parties were Mrs J. D. Ormond and Mrs P. F. Wall. Some of those dancing were : — Mr and Mrs A. Kirkpatrick (Hastings), the latter gowned in cherry velvet with a cluster of violets on the neekline and a white fur wrap. . Mr and Mrs A. L. McCormiek, the latter wearing black chitt'on velvet, with diamante elasp on each side of the rounded neekline. Mr and Mrs 0. M. Williamson, the latter chose a frock of parchment satin royal, figured in blue and red. and a blue velvet coatee, Mrs R, O. Bousfield, model gown ui black self-spotted satin backed crepe the pointed corsage finisbed with folds of gold lame and gold buckles at the waistliiie, worn with a white ermine stole. Mrs S. Peterkin, wearing a black cire satin skirt with a tunio of black net painted with blue, pink and silver flowers. , Mrs J- A. ftlcLean, black matelasse, having grcen velvet flowers on the neekline. and a stone marten fur. Mrs H. Peacock, black ring velvet with i'ull elbow length sleeves.

Mrs F. A. G. Dunn, black georgette gown with narrow frills on the Irirt and a shoulder posy of shaded flowers. Mrs John Williams, burgundy embossed velvet, having long sleeves. Mrs J. Kendall, black ring velvet, the matching coatee having full puffed sleeves. Mrs P. F. .Wall, trained gown in black sheer chiffon, hand-painted with big red and silver flowers. Mrs W. B. Fisher, slimly fashioned gown in black georgette with a diamante buckle on waistline. Mrs J. W. Harding, black satin frock worn with a tunic of black net banded in satin and corsage spray of scarlet anemones. Mrs G. Giblin, gold lame having long lactk sleeves with mauve shaded flowers on waistilne. Mrs E. Elliott, black crepe de chine patterned with clusters of cherry and green flowers. Mrs McKenzie (Havelock), chose white satin backed crepe, the off-shoul-der corsage finished with a frill and narrow diamante shoulder strap. Mrs J. R. Byrne, black chantilly lace, having a cherry taffeta sash and matching corsage spray. Mrs N. Tate, apricot mirror velvet with full sleeves and pink corsage posy. Mrs F. de Stacpoole, black satin royal with softly folded corsage. Mrs E. B. Todd was wearing black net appliqued with clusters of scarlet flowers, mounted on black satin. Mrs. G. R. Cook, pale greensilk Jace, the cowl back lined with gold lame. Mrs. W. G. McKenzie, brown satin frock with bands of cream satin in corsage. Mrs. E. T. Haldane, saxe-blue wool lace, having narrow frills on the skirt. Mrs. McKenzie Forbes (Palmerston), black satin frock with a red corsage spray. Mrs. B. Miss Clara Flemingt flame and silver striped cotelle, with butterfly sleeves. Miss Betty Bryce chose crepe-de-chene flowered in red roses, with a red belt. Miss Mary Fleming, scarlet satin worn with a belt of silver. Miss Mary Wall, kenya-red lacquer taffeta having a full skirt and squaro neekline. 'Miss B. Mitchell, midniglit bluo ribbed crepe, with a matching coatee. Miss Bensen, froclc in black cloque, having folds of gold lame on the corsage. Miss M. Urquhart, floral frock worn with a black velvot coateo. Miss Jean Hunter, bronze taffeta frock, with a folded tie sash. Miss E. Paget, slimly fashioned gown in bottle-green ring velvet. Miss Margaret Robinson, scarlet georgette .frock with.a spray of white roses on front neekline. Miss Honey Cuthbert,-blue georgette, with waterfall frills on skirt. Miss G. Coughlan, apricot and pink flowered crepe georgette, shirred on hip. Miss Frances Atkins, pale green suede crepe, with a pleated fish-tail tunic frill. Miss June Hewitt, black satin royal, patterned in cream and red roses. Miss M. Goodeve was wearing a multi-coloured striped tunic, with a black velvet skirt. Miss Nancy Reidy, pale blue lace, tho matching coatee having a high medici collar. ' Miss Yal, Ross, deep mauve crepe frock4 worn with a gold lame tunic, Miss U. Herrick, flame chiffon frock, having a softly folded corsage and very full skirt. Miss E. Wall was "wearing black satin patterned in big pink' and pale blue poppies. Miss M. Ellingham, graceful white taffeta gown patterned in ' ehades of violet.
