i F. Dalton, trainer of Sjlver Standard, thinks Maia will continue to beat his horse in weight-for-age races, butnot in the Metropolitan. "I have no doubt that Maia' is the better horse," said Dalton, "but in the -Metropolitan be will meet Silver Standard on 101b. worse terms than when he beat liim in t-he Chelmsford Stakes, and I think that will turn the tables. No plans have yet been made about the rest of his progiamme before the Metropolitan," he added. "but I would like to give him a couple more runs. The moro work he does the better he becomes." Mr A. E. Cooper is equaily confident of Metropolitan success ■ with Maia. It is almost certain that the two horses will continue to domiliate the betting from now on. The Chelmsford Stakes," nine furlongs, was run at.an ideal rate of speed for Maia. E1 Senorita went out at a solid pace, followed by Caesar and Silver Standard. McCarten was able to take Maia along quietly . for the first . two furlongs, but by the time the half-mile was reaehed he had work his way up to.'fourth place. Silver Standard was was ihe first to go out after Ei Senorita and joined her on the home* turn, with Maia still making up ground. ; Silver Standard shot away at the Leger, but Maia was quickly on top of him, and after a short , struggle giained the upper hand. It was a.popn- , lar.win for.a plucky owner, and meant that Mr .Cooper had regained .£810 from his outlay of £7000 in the purchase of the horse. The Taradale School annual ball held in the Taradale Hall, was a great success. The judges of the fancy dresses and novelty costumes made their awards . as ' follow:— - : First ditision:Marcia »W ilkinson, "Little Lord Fauntleroy" ; Tua Stainton, "Madame *Pompadour" ; Keith BroWn, "Hay Seed."
