MR. ESSON'S RETIREMENT

Tributes by Court Officials and Legal Profession At the opening of the weekly sitting of the Hastings Magistrate's Court this morning opportunity was taken to farewell Mr. J. B. Esson, who severs his connection to-inorrow with the Court staff in Hastings after occupying for over 20 years the positions of bailiff, inspector of factories and probation and maintenance offieer. Mr. E." J. Hnllett, on hehalf of tho legal profession, expressed regret at Mr. Esson 's pending retirement. "We regret losing Mr. Esson," he said, "bccause he h'as always been ia real friend to the profession. Ho has been courteous and ohliging at all times and, while being helpful towards the legal profession, he has always carried out his duties with forbearanee and kindly consideration for the unfortunate persons upon whom he has had to serve summonses, so that he has trhly . earned the respect of all. He is a kindly man and has a genial naturfi and genuine sympathy for the underdog. He has had a distinguisbed career, although he has not figured promincntly in public life. He has performed his duties in a quict way to the satisfaction of • everybody, pleasing both parties in any action in which he has takOn part. We shall miss him very much, but we congratulate him on having reached the timo when he can enjoy his well-earn'ed leisure and we Wish him continued good health." Sonior-Sergeant G. Sivyer, on behalf of the police of Hastings, associated himself with Mr. Hallett's remarks. 4 ' Mr. Esson has at all times performed his duties in the most efficient manner," said Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in adding his tribute. "As probation officer he has assisted the Court considerabiy by his reports. He was the right type of man in that position, and he took an interest in those placed under his care. ' ' Mr. Esson,. in thanking the> speakers for their remarks, said that ho had alWays tried to carry out his duties in the best way possible. It gave him great pleasure, indeed, to hear the kind words of appreciation spoken about him. It had been his aim at all times to do the best for both parties. Mr. Esson 's successor, Mr. A. G. Johnston,, of Westport, arrived in Hastings last evening and took up his duties this morning.
