Don't forgQt that on Friday next first-day accept&nces for the A.B.C, spring meeting, final payments^for the Great. Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes, also a first acceptance for the N.Z. Cup have to be made and entries for the other principal events at the C.J.C. meeting, likewise nominationS both for the Wellington Spring meeting (with forfeits for the Wellesley Stakes) and for the Avondale Second Spring meeting, all by 5 .p.m. * * # The Ellerslie-trainedi gelding Valmint in enjoying a respite and will not resume work for some weeks. He was galloped on in both of his races at tho Avondale meeting, but the trouble did not prove serious. # * • Gay Streak, says the Auckland Sitar ran two good races at Avondale, and if started in the Hack. Cup at the Taumarunui meeting his prospects will have to be considered. This hacks hangs On fairly well, and as h© ie a smart beginner, he jyill be suited by tho turning course at Paeroa. * • * The first foal by the Elderslie Stud stallion Solicitor General niade his appearance last week, this being a bay iolt from Sweet Oharity, the dam of the Surgeon. ahd the Iliad colt sold at the recent Sydney yearling saies for 700 guineas and now known as Glaucus. The foal is full of quality and a real Blandford iin typo._ • * # « Travenna did not take long to make good as a hurdler. The track conditions were more to his liking at Orari than at Ashburton, and he disposed of the opposition very comfortably in the sun home. Most of Tractor's stock have shown aptitude over obstacles, andi Travenna has the additional qualificatioo of being able to handle weight. • • * A two-year-old gelding by Leader from Red Hind has been broken in by C. O. McCarthy for Mr L. J. Fechney, Ashburton. Leader was placed in his only start as a two-year-old and won his first three races at the beginning of the following season, but he was unable to race afterwards. He is by Chief Huler from Forxnless, and Red Hind is a flister .to Wild Hind, dam of Wild Chase* • «s « _ Trench Fight has been restricted to light exercise at Trentham during the last few Weeks as he lost a lot of condition with hia two races at the Grand National meeting. However, hei is picking up again an1> may be ready to resume strong work soon. His stablematfe, Paper Hlipper, was off the scene for a week, after ©uttiing a piece out. of a foot while doing slow work, but he, too, is back in work, ready to start galloping again. It is hoped that this pair wilj[ be for^vard qnough to race at Trentham next month, ik dk

Cuddel naturally holds pride of place in the handicap for the New Zealand Cup, as she won the race two years ago and woh the last two Auckland Cups. With 9.9 she has not been overburdened by any means, but there is a doubt, of course, that she may never regain her previous outstanding form. It is understood she is doing weli'in her work at Trentham, but one .would like to see her in action agiain before disoussing her prospects of further successes. Silver Ring ia in his right place with 9.7, but again there is a doubt about his staging a comeback. * * • There has been much speculation, says the Christchurch Press, as to what poundage Wild Chase would get in the New Zealand Cup, and with 8.13 he is very well placed, and no doubt he will be one of the early favourites. Argentio on 8.1i has been over the journey several times, and has proved himself a good stayer, but in his case also he will have to show some form in his race in the next few weeks to come in for consideration. # ' ' # • Greek Shepherd is also in at a handy weight, and will be an interesting candidate if he carries on satisfactorily. He was not gble to race at Ashburton or Geraldine through injuring himself in his box, but is right again. Queen of Song must have beeh. a difficult mare to handicap, as she has not won a race for a long time, but no risk could be taken with her. At 8.8 siie has been afforded every opportunity once more to make good. \ * • • Race Boy, a five-year-old gelding by Raceful, a son of Martian, from Cochineel, has done little raoing, but this season he has already won three in four starts, includiiig a dead "heat, and it does not look as if he has reached the end of his winning run yet. Cochineel, his dam, jvas by All Red from Peroneal, by Achilles from Prelude, by 1 Merrie England, and descends from' the famous colonial tap-root established by Rosebud, which did great service for Mr Henry Redwood in the latter half of last century. # * # At the second lot of two-year-old trials at Randwick recontly the Iliad — Black Cat colt Miltiades was again the winner of his heat, the distance on this oocasion bedng half a. mile. Other N.Z.bred heat winners were the Limond — Anklet colt Limulet, and the Hunting Song — Miss Edna colt Mocaic, who Song — Miss Edna colt Chasseur and the Posterity — Inlaad colt Mosaic, who finished together. The fastest time, Sl^s., was registered by Chasseur and Mosaic, by Strathroy (Veilmond— Freebay) and Ethya (Heroic— Soaring), and by Radio Queen (Marconigram — Aslitar), in their respective heats. • # m Following the scratching of Lord.Astor's colt, Cash Book, Gordon Richardg, Elnglandi's.leading jockey,. secured a lucky "last-minute ride" on Chulmledgh in . the $t. Leger at Doncaster. It was only at the week-end that Richards "W.SbSf engaged to rjde Chulmlei^h. At the time Ohulmleighi was at a long price, but the fact that Richards rode him caused his quotation to sink. * * • The Melbourne Cup favourite Black Mac is by Beau Fils (son of Son-in-Law) from Faluga? By Trafalgar (son of Wallace) from Ljttawa, by Soult (son of St. Simon) from Keepsake, by St. Leger (son of Doncaster) from Bangle, by Musket from Locket (imp), by Thunderbolt. Horses by Son-in-Law and his »

sons have been winning most of the besffc" long-distance races in England of recent years, and Beau Fils is a son of Son-in-Law. The dam of Black Mao is by Trafalgar, than whom there have been few better stuyers in Australia. Trafalgar, like Black Mac, developed slowly, says "Ohiron," and he was a much better and more brilliant horse at the end oi his racing career than was as a young horse. Black Mac has developed on similar lines. We have already had one Melbuorne Oup winner from this family, as King Ingoda was a descendant of Locket.
