Practice for N.Z. Golf Tourney AUSTRALIANS ARRIVE
( By Telegraph-
HAMILTON, Last Night. '« Joining the large number of entrants for the New Zealand golf championships, which commence on Thursday, H. W. Hatterslev and Dr. H. M. Cutlcr, oi Australia, arrived at the St. Andrew'a eourse to'-day for their first practice for the tournament. Other prominent • Dominion golfers also arrived to-day and useful work was accomplished by the most likely contenders for the open. Hattersley played a good round thia morning on the course, which was enlirely sriange to him. His score was 75, and ifc included ten fours and two threcs. Ho went out in 38 and returned homc in 37. It was promising form when it is considsred that his knowledge of the distances was practicaliy nil, and the lie of the land and the greens was also" new to him. After further practico oii the couxso he should score very well. . 1 Although xenowned for his long drive, Hattorslev did hot hit longer strokcs from the tee to-day than did A. J. Shavv, New Zealand open champion. However," his tee and fairway shots wero neatly executed, and he experienced very little trouble on the strange greens. Playing with Hattersley was Dr. Cutler, who carded 78. At times Dr.Cutler out-distanced Hattersley from the tee, but on the green he was.xepeatedly short. Further experience On the St. Andrew's greens should eiiminate that trouble considerably. Dr. Cutler 's game iniproved on the homeward nine, where he carded 38. A. J. Shaw was again consistent when he had a 74. Norrie' Bell was much improved and finished with a 75. In compariy with this pair were J. E./ Moss and T. S. Gallowajr, both of whom carded 74 after playing good golf. ' If the present form of these players is maintained the open should be an interesting tussle. The best Tound of the morning was that of A. E. Guy, the young professional, who came o£ the course in 73,. one below the scratch score. His long game was "particularly impressive. J., P. Hornabrook, the New Zealand ama-, teur titleholder, ' repeated his good . work of yesterdav, and in • his first round to-day had a 74. B. M. Silk, a, likely amateur of this year, played good golf in a round of 74. H. D. Brinsden, who has been conspicuous in North Island golfing circies recently, was not on his game when he played his first practico Tound this morning. H. E1 liell, the young Auckland provincial champion, went. round in 77/ With only a/light breeze the condi-' itions on the links were ideal and bet|ter. than yesterday. ^ ; The two Australian visitors, W. H. Hattersley, ex-Australian champion, and Dr. Cutler, his partner, and a Kirk •Wydney player, opp.osed J. P. Hornabrook and P, G. Eoberts (Hutt) in a fourball this afternoon, the match fin-. ishing- all- square. The best score recorded to-day was that of E. J. Moss (70), and this was followed by A. E. Ekstedt (71), A. J. (Shaw (72) and A. Murray. (72).,
