Italian Broadcasts in the Friendliest of Terms SECRET SERVICE SURPRISED British Intelligence officers, Kstening in as usual to Italian broadcasts from Bari, heard a strange langiuage. They have been used to programmes from Italy in Arabio in which Mussolini announced himself as the "Friend of the Arabs in Palestine." These broadcasts brought Mussolini a sharp rebuke from Britain, and he promised to remove their anti-British sting. The Intelligence officers were checking up on the Bari broadcasts to in.-. sure that the promi'se was fulhlled^ tut this new language on the air beaj? t-hem. They called in other experts. And it turned out that the language • was Hebrew. The Italian broadcastes; was addressing the Jews in the friendliest of terms, promising them his support in their "just national aspirafi tions." The .tone of the broadcast suggested that Italy may be trying to keep alive the present dispute hetween Jews and Arabs in Palestine. . It is understood, however, thqjg Whitehall is not likely tp take anjf, action, so long as Mussolini does no£j attempt to inflame Arab feeling, ~
