ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
Elderly Man Convicted "It is, not usual for the Court to move in such matters— the applxcation usually comes from the accused ; but he is not in a proper state. I tbiuk it is charity in a case like this, and ifc may help him,'' said Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in tlxe Napier Magistrate's Court this morning, as he suppressed the name of an elderly man who had been convicted nf attempted suicide. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within one year, a condition being that he return forthwith to th© Napier Publio Hospital and remain there until discharged by the Medical Superintendent. Accused appeared in Court wearing an overcoat over his pyjamas, and when the charge was read he said, "That's right." He pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. Benior-Sergeant W. Pender stated that the accused was found on the night, of September 3 in the kitehenette of his Lorne, The gas had been turned on in the oven. "He .had preyiously. threatened, and has since threatened, to commit suicide," he continued, "and he is in a very bad state of liealth, his heart being weak, 1 wps in communication tljiB mprning with the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Foley, and he says they are willing to take hira back to the hospital and be responsiblo for him there, He has recovered from the elfects of the gas, bufc is iu a bad state of health." Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within oue year.
