District Commissioner Killed by Arabs
VIOLENCE IN PALESTINE

(Eeceived 27, 10.10 a.m.) NAZARETH, Sept. 26. Besides killing a British constable, armed Arabs shot dead the Australian Mr Lewis Yelland Andrews, District Commissioner of Galilee, aged 41 yeaTS. He leaves a widow and threo children. Three assassins shot Mr. Andrews as he was leaving the Anglican Church, which he attended as the representative of the High Commissioner. The murdered policeman, Mr. Peter Robertson McEhvan, who was in plain clothes, died in kalf an hour. His service was almost expired, after which ho intended going to New Zealand. in order to marry. Mr. Pirie-Gordon, assistant- District Commissioner, narrowly escaped. "Run for it, Pirie Gordon. They've got us," shouted Mr. Andrews as the murderers fired. He was aware that atterapts on his life were eontemplated. He had been No. 1 on the terrorisfs* black list for months owing to the strictness of liis rule. Th© victkns will be accorded a rniliv funeral to-morrow. Police dogs are tracking down the assailants. All Toads are closed, and curfew has been enforced. The Arab Higher Committee learned of the assassinations with deep regret and believed that the public would share in the horror and condemnation. Two Arab notables, Awad IDioury, the richest Christian Arab landlord in North Palestine, and Sheik Mohammed Ibrahim, a land broker, were assassiiM ated at their homes. Armed police and military are patrolling the Upper Galilee region to prevent the smugglihg of arms across the Jor-i clan and. the Syrian fronter. The Arab National Committee has i#t sued a -manifesto urging the Arabs in Galilee to Tefrain from acts of violence.
