Chess Eesults The attendanco at the Waipukurau Chess . Club's weekly meeung was smaller than usual. Only oue .champioushi.p match was played, resulting iu W. Eugland defeatiug Q. E.' kowler. In jiractice games J. H. Walker beat G. 0. Stapleton aud F. AVilson, aua lost to B. W. Carpenter; and F. Wilson det'eated G-. C. Stapleton. norsewood Keturned Soldiers. Tho quarterly meeting of the Norsewood and district branch of the Keturned Holdieio' Assoeiation was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Ormondville, on Tkursday evening. Mr W. Te Tau presided. -Mr J. C. Castles, who \vas recommended at a former ineeting as Ormondville delegate to tne War Kelief Assoeiation, was found to be nnavailable and Mr H. O. Baines was elected for recommendation in his stead. The etatement of aecounts sliowed a satisfactory bank balance. Mr E. Stretton tendered his rceignation on aceount of tiie probability of his leaving the district. On aceepting the xesignation the presidcnt, Mr W. Te Tau, expressed regret at the loss of Mr Stretton. Mr L. Bishop was elected seeretary and Mrs Onslow Baines was elected an honorary member in reeognition of overseas nursmg servicc. Caxds at Makotuku. The weeldy eard tournainent held under the auspices of the Makotuku branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was well attended. In the women 's section the lirst prize was annexed by Miss E. Mortensen, Norsewood, Miss Edna Baines, Ormondville, being succcssful in gaining second prize. For the men, Mr K. Littie gained lirst prize, Mr M. Oarruthers being eecond. Waipawa Lodge Meets. The fortnightly. meeting of ihe Loyal Abbotsford JLodge, Manchester Unity Oddf ellows, was held : at Waipawa, the N.G., Bro. D. N. MacFhsrson^ presiding over a good attendance. Three new members were initiated. The N.G. reported on a visit to tlie Loyal Hastings Lodge. The lodge had taken part in the inter-lodge bowling competition held at Hastings re'cently. He intimated that the next meeting of the lodge would begin at eight o'clock, and that the ritual judges would be in attendance. A praetise was called for Tuesday next. At the conclusion of the meeting members spent the evening playing bowle. Fortnightly Card Party. On Wednesday evening the fortnightly flag 500 card party was held at Porangahau. The attendance was not so good as previously. The winners were Mrs J. Oook, jnr., Mrs Fallahee, Mrs Turi and Mrs McOlutchie. Porangahau Golf. The Porangahau Women 's Golf Ulub played, the third and final round. for Mrs E. Kopiha's trophy on Wednesday and tho best cards handed in were: Mrs K. Kopiha 111, 32, 79; Mrs Stewart 102, 22, 80; Mrs Ward 112, 25, 87; Mrs Eoss 136, 36, 100. Mrs Stewart was the winner of this trophy with 149 net. Play and Impromptu Speeches. The monthly meeting of the Greenmeadows Women 's lnstitute drama eircle took the form of a play-reading. Mrs Scott presided. Those taking the vari.ous parts were Mesdames Scott, Toueher, Arihstrong, Logan, Goodall and McAulay. The same play will be performed in character at the next institute meeting. Later papers were drawn out of a hat to provide subjeets for a three-minute impromptu speech. The winner was Mrs McAulay, the subject being " Are cats an asset to a family?" Dannevirke Aero Club Eeeord. Making his iirst solo fiight after only 3 hours 40 minutes of duul instruction, Mr L. Brown set a new record for the Dannevirke scetion of the Wairarapa and Buahine Aero Club during tne week. This is the first oceasion that' a pilot has flown solo on less than i'our hours' dual instruction, while the average period in city club is stated to be eight or nine hours before tho pilot is entrusted with the plane alone. Cards at Eskdale. Two card evenings in aid of the Eskdale Women '« lnstitute fuuds were held recently. The first was held at Mrs Spence's residence. Winners of cards wero Mrs King and Mr F. Olds. The hostess's competition was won by Miss Wilson. Mrs Marbel was hostess at the second evening. The card winners were Miss Wiison and Mr Olds. A competition was won by Mr A. King, and another by Miss Blair. Givil Court Cases. Mr J. Miller S.M., gave judgment for plaiutitis by default in the following civil cases heard iu the- Waipukurau Court: — Snelling and Sidweil v. Kapuka te Maliu, £.13 16/4, costs £3 1 /- j W.. B. Fislier v. W. Wakefield, 1;1 1/-, costs 13/-; li. E. Fuller v. W. Hiriui. £9 5/5; costs £1 15/6. On a judgment summons'H. Eden vas or- , dered to pay £3 8/- iorthwith, in default four day's imprisonmenb. Norsewood School Aflairs. At the monthly meeting of the Norsewood 'School Committee. there were present; .Mr C. Poulsen (cliairman), Mrs A. Mildon, Messrs A. Uitcbie, A. Nicbolson, E Parsons and A. M i lclon (seeretary) . Mattci's in eonneetion with the calfrearing computition for school cliiidrcn were discussed and Mr W, H. Ltidge's donation of 5/- towards prizes was much appreciated. Tho date for the childrcu's fancy dress ball was fixed. Accolints atnounting to £8 2 9 were paased for payment.
Makotuku Horticultural Show. At a meeting held in the Makotuku hall it was decided to hold a horticutlural show in the autumn, either in February or March. the dat.e to be fixed later Ormondville School Concert. A meeting was held at the Ormondville School rcceutly wlieu Mr P. Smalley, the headmaster, met the mothers of the children attending the scliool to discuss preliminary arrangements for a pupils' concert.
