Wairoa Farmers' Losses
(From
WAIROA, .This Day-. Heavy mortality among newly-born lambs. is reported to be causing concern to farmers in the Wairoa district. While lambing percentages have been fairly high, mortality has oecurred after the lambs have been born, ■ and not among the ewes. It appears that the exceptionally dry autumn has left little winter feed ^available for breeding ewes, which consequently have been in fairly poor condition to nourish lambs. Born comparatively weak, the lambs have been unable to stand up to the bad wbather experienced during the height of the season. In other in^tances, symptoms simiiar to pulpy kidney were in evidence, quickly followed by numerous deaths. These eases occurred when bleak weather suddenly lifted, to be succeeded by warm spring sunshine and a flush of grass. The eudden change in diet had upset the digestive systems of the sbeep, used to dry and sparse winter ; pastures. ! Docking is now well under way, es- •' pecially on the lower levels. V
