Plumbers and Gasfitters

AUCKLAND, Last Night. The demands of plumbers and gasfitters for a Dominion award were argued before the Arbitration Court. The proposed award would apjjfly to all parts of the Dominion, except Nelson. Mr. W. E. Anderson asked whether the existing exemptions would be again granted by the Court. Mr. justice O'Eegan, who presided, said he was not in a position to give a general assurance, but the tendency of the Court was to maintaifi consistency. It was .decided to set aside' November 1 for the hearing of exemptions. Among tlie matters in dispute were the employers' counter-proposals to permit certain Saturday work for gasfitters and to have a 44-hour week for shop repair work. Tho employers oJTcrcd a minimum wago of 2/52 an hour for rcgistcred plumbers, witk 2d less for uuregis.tcrcd men, and thc'men asked for a minimum of 2/9 an hour for plumbers or gas litters and 3/3" for lead burners. The men also asked for an allowanee of 4d an hour for worlccrs using. their own motor conveyance. In annouucing that the Court would take time to consider its dccision, his Honour said the Court might make an announcement before November 1 regarding exemptions.
