WELLINGTON, This Day. I The question whether all taxis should be compelled to carry a double windscreen wiper was discussed by the Coroncr, Mr. J. H. Gilbertson, counsel and tho witness in the course of an inqnest to-d,ay, the view of the taxidriver being that double "wipers should" be made eorofmlsory. The Coroner found a verdict that Joseph Giles, aged 81, retired storoman, died from injuries reeeived when .he was knocked down by a taxi driven by Victor George Beck, on July 24, the immediate cause of death being hypostatie pneumonia. Evidence was given that the injuries ineluded a compound fracture of the right leg. Beck said that there was a fine drizzle at the time of the accident, when he felt a bump. He stopped in less than a car length. Tho wiper was working, and he kad a good view aliead. The side from which the injured man must have come was obscured. To his counsel, he replied that two wipers should be made compulsory for taxis. He tliougkt it quite possible lie might have seen the deeoased if ho had had a double wiper. Mr. Gilbertson said he did not think it would have mueh elfect, even if he relurned a flnding to the elfect suggested. ''ilodern liiuprovcments sucli as these establish themselves without 'compulsion; they come throujgh conipetition," added the Coroner.
