Dargaville's Main Street Under Water
SHOPS SUFFER DAMAGE
(By Telegraph-
DARGAVILLE, Last Night. Backed by a strong southerly wind and a spring tide, the river rose very quickly shortly after noon to-day and flooded the town, which by one o'clock had about two feet of water in the main street. The water made its way into the shops on the lower side of the main street and lapped at the .doorways of even the higher-flooTed buildings. So suddenly did the water rise that shoppers were caught and marooned in shops, while workers who had gone to lunch had to return by wading, boots and shoes being removed while people crept along close to buildings. It is impossible to estimate what damage has been done. The lower-lying areas in .the surrounding country also are coveredwith water.
