Review of To-morrow's Fields STRONG H.B. TEAM
(By
Th6 spring meeting of tke Marton Racing Club takes place to-raorrow when the iields should furnish very interesting racing. Hawke's Bay will be represented by a very stroiig teain and should play a prominent part in the majority of the races. Of the 19 Hawke's Bay horses entered only Top Hat, Lq Touquet. Joviality ^nd Slippery have declined aoceptance. The Marton track in the spring ia geneinlly on tho soft side. Betting will be ox fche single pool. The following is a review oi the Iields: — 12.0: JUVENILE HANDICAP, This race is for two-year-olds. Thore is very littlo guide here for speculators, ua the three that have racing experienco failed to run prominently at any stage of the raco at Wanganui, althougk that education may have beneflted them. Perhaps private reputation will be relied upon. The Bay's representative is Gay Son, and unless thero is something extra slick in this iield Mr A. Symes's Beau Pere colt will go vory close to gaining the first raco for his sire. Maybe the best backed will be GAY SON. DORAK and RUSSIAN BALLET. 12.40: MAIDEN RACE. Like the above race there is not a great deal of visible forin among these 18 acceptors. Relativo was second in a novice event last season, but at Wanganui was nowhere in the maidon, proving a very big disappointment to 1 ner connections. To Hiko and Ambition are said to be smart. Aiia was secona to White Gold at Wanganui, but last Saturday the threc-year-old daughter of Hunting Song and Paoanui was never dangerous in the five and a-half furlong hack, but perhaps the distanco was a little short as it was six furlongs when she was second. Jacynth galloped nicely yesterday morning when, in company with Brunhilde, ran half a mile on the plough in 49secs., so has only to behavo herself at the barrier to go close in breaking her duck. Gay Hunting was third to Joe Louis and Starono at Fox- , ton, which gives him a chance. Of the others Conveyor, Amatory and Bold Bruce have been working well on their respective training tracks. Threo that may appeal most are JACYNTH, ABIA and GAY HUNTING. 1.30: HACK HURDLES HANDICAP. Trackinan is in winuing and raciug conditiou, as at Wanganui was a iirst and a second. Bound Score failed at Foxton in his initial attoinpt uvor hurdles after most promising track vvork. Buenzori has beon racing of late over country, so perhaps will be found jumping too big m consequence. Patagonia won well at Foxton so must be hard to dispose of again. At the same meeting Even Money was third. En Vidette has only to be half as good as his reputation to give the opposition a headache. The listed ones in the second (iolumn do not appeal and perhaps Otaki will do best of them. Most money may be carried by EN VIDETTE, PATAGONIA and TRACKMAN. 2.0: TUTAENUI HACK HANDICAP. Corroboree iu the past has done better over middle. distances so this, his iirst race for sorne time, may not see him carrying solid support. The Bigot won last season, and like oue or two of tho others may be in want of a race or two to bring him back to his best. Ladv Siegfried may take on the hack cup as she likes a bit of ground to race over iustead of the sprints. Wagner might surprise as ho has been going well at Awapuni, Dawning Light is fast but bleeds, thus preventing confidence being placed in her. Son and Heir must not be disregarded because it is his iirst race since the autumn. All Spirit is a recent winner, but over ten furlongs, howe'ver, racing eondition is a factor to be considered in the ■ early spring. Gladium failed to iinish in the iirst half-dozen at Foxton. Hastings holds a fair hand in Buster Brown, Thala and Joe Louis. Tho latter won rvell at Foxton, but among an ordinary lot of uovices. howevcr. Thala has been galloping nicely and Thursday mornmg broke C3secs. for five furlongs on the Hastings plougli. Buster Brown by the easy manner in which he defeated Padishah tho otlier morning will have to bo, considered. Cute Melody and ' Mahaanui are fair gallopers and the former is lucky getting in with but 81bs. above the ininimum. Three that may be entrusted with the public's money are ALL SPIBIT, THALA and BUSTEK BBOWN.
2.45: MABTON HANDICAP. A tricky field this may prove to be. Friesland has proved himself a good sort, but a milo has been his best. Pukeko at 9.2 cannot but help to appeal. Gold Mission has the eondition and her first last week-end in the Foxton Gold Cup will see that she is oue of the bestbacked division. Lowenberg hails iroin the same stable as Friesland, but of dift'erent ownership. His second in his one start at Wanganui shows this Lord Quex gelding and New Zealand Derby winner to be about back to his best and if he starts will go out very nearlj tho best backed Alby races well fresh, while Might is the sort that pops up occasionally to surprise, but is not t»s consistent 03 he might be. Passion Fruit appeals only at tho weight. Entail raced poorly at Wanganui in his one start, while old Grand Jury looks as though he has "done his puncli. " Reipar is not a bad sort and may spring a surprise on this field to-morrow when the favou rites may be LOWENBERC, psr> | PUKEKO and GOLD MI8S10N.
3.25; BPEING HACK CUP. Taillight ran very consistently at the end of last season as, after dead-heating in the Carbine Plate at Auckland came to Hastings to run a first and a second and theu to Bangitikei, finished third to Pakanui, and Airing in the opou seven, ;having behind him Cataloguo, Brazen King and company. Hunting c^ueen is not reliable, while Lady Siegfried should strip a better mare than last week. Quadroon has a reputation of being something above tke° average, but at the end of last season and the beginning of this has failed to be in the money. Spender is only an average hack at his very best4 while Ned Cuttle has yet to prove himself capable of winuing over a middle distance. Blue Tiger will have a track to his liking and may be the surprise packet of this hack cup race. Liane has yet to be tried over a middle distance, while Warehi was last at Foxton, but first ija his previous Wanganui start. Malibu was secona. 10 Middle over a mile and a distance at Wanganui. Chat is well overdue. Of the others Blue Shirt may do best as he has been galloping well, but it is hard to gauge how he will shape with youug Stowe on him, as he does not appear to be a kid's korse. What will carry ruore money than TAILLIGHT, MALIBU and BLUE SHIRT? 4.0: RAILWAY HANDICAP. Oratory has proved herself brilliani, • but has no recent form to offer. also last summer raced poorly. Smoke Screen has not raced since winning the Sires' Produce Stakes last autmn at Awapuni, but tho Fordell-trained horses in the past have always raced prominently in the spring. The Buzzer, from the same stable as Oratory, proved himself a fair sort last season when middle distances suited him the best. Pakanui is losing his brilliancy and tails off tho iirst portion of his races nowadays: nevertheless, his racing eondition may pull him through. Last season Greeuwich was a brilliant iilly, but her running at Wanganui was bclow expectations. Dancing Lhdy, a hack4 may surprise. Most money may be invested on the chances of SMOKE SCREEN, DANCING LADY and PAKANUI. 4.55: FAREWELL HANDICAP. Wildflower last season was useful among the juveniles and she is said to have improved with her Wanganui outing. Geira has been galloping attractively here for this last month and at her favourite distance should go close. Dawning Light and Colleen Gain at their best would appeal, while Eacecall's dead-heat with Joviality last week brings him into favour, despite him being by an unknown sire. Royal Choice won well at New Plymouth and has a reputation of being smart. Of the others Rhodesian and Lady Hoariri may i do best. The favourite may come from WILDFLOWER, GEIRA and ROYAL CHOICE
