UNEMPLOYMENT TAX

-Presa Association.)

(By Telegraph-

WELLINGTON, This Day. Criticism of the Government for not reducing the amount of the unemployment taxation was expressed by the Hon. Sir Aifred Kansom (Opposition, Pahiatua). "Unemployment is a very unpopular subject with the Governmeut just now," he said. The Minister of Mmes, the Hon. P. C. Webb: How many unemployed are there in your electorate? Sir Alfred: There are 22 men on sustenance® and there should not be any. hir Alfred said that if the previous, Government had remained in power it would have wiped out the wages and registration taxes altogcther. Evon auring the depression, the last Governmgnt had reduced the wages.tax from 1/- to 8d., so that surely it was possible for the preseut Government, in the present prosperous times, to take away the tax entiraly. "There is no necessity for that tax," ht declared.
