France and Spain INSURGENT THREAT - f Raiders Sent Back by French Machine-Gunners REPRISALS FOR ARREST OF REBEL GENERAL

(Received 23, 12.20 p.m.) PARiy, Sept. 22. The Foreign Office states that M. Pierre Desmartin, French consul at Malaga, has been detamed by the Spanish insurgents, it is believed as a reprisal for General Toncoso's arrest. The expulsion of French journalists from insurgent territory is expected. Several Frenchmcn have been arrested at San Sebastian. Spanish Fascists attempted ito cross the frontier at Hendaye at night-time to reseue General To'ncoso. The Mobile Guards were forewarned and rushed extra machine-guns to the centre of the . international bridge. The raiders advanced almost to the muzzles of the machine-guns but retreated at the sight of the determined, steelhelmeted guards behind massed machine-guns. New anti-aircraft guns and sound detectors have been installed at Hendaye. Transport lorries are being held in readiness. The Popular Front organisations have promised to aid the Mobile Guards iu any emergeney that may arise from the present situation. .
