NOTES AND COMMENTS

"The Barb. ")

(By

The following Hawke's Bay horses claim engagement at the Marton meeting on Saturday next: Gay Son, Hahutai, Jacynth, En Yidette, Top Hat, Helios, Buster Brown, Joe Louis, Thala, Le Touquet, Pakanui, Passion Fruit, Joviality, Blue Tiger, Blue Shirt, Slippery, Giera, Hunting Spy, Colleen Gain, and Pukehou. * Gay Son is Mr. A. Symes's very promisifig two-year-old colt by Beau Pero out of the Lord Quex mare, La Moderne. This colt has been acquitting himself in great style at Greenmeadows this last two or three weeks and is suroc. to carry solid monetary support from this part of the district. With tho exception of a trio his opponents are, like himself, unraced, and the three that did race at Wanganui failed to show up at all at any part of the four and a-quar-ter furlongs. # ■# * Mahutai is one of two Hawke's Bay entrants for the maiden, but anything this Hunting Son three-year-old hats done has failed to attract attention so that his chances will not be fancied. e «= » Jacynth, the three-year-old fiby- by Gainscourt — Conehita, is a typical galloper and has only to settle down to prove a useful performer for Mr. F. Ormond, of Napier. Trainer S. J. Reia has been very patient Avith this lighti'ramcd cliestrrat. The opposition in the maiden is not what could be termed strong for the 6pring and Avith an experienced horseman on top Jacynth should be prominent. * & * En Yidette eujoys a private- reputation as a fencer but unfortunateiy is unsound. Since last autumn spccnmtor? have been waiting for him to make his debut as a hurdler, but to date trainer H. S« Green has been unable to land Mr. Symes's gelding at the post. He has been standing up to his work 6atisfactorily of late, but when the pressure is applied may go out again. Top Hat will not be making tbe trip, as ho has a very big knee and has been physickeu this week. The injury was sustained at Wanganui and prevented him from taking part in the lmck hurdles at Foxton on Saturday last. * « a This writer would not aare 1o recommend Helios to any of his friends or readere, being afraid of the conseauences. There is a saying that there is nothing iu the world like a horse to looi ti man, and il! Helios triumphs then the wholo sporting world will bo fooled good and hard. * *- Buator Brown is an improved hack and the other morning beat Padishah all tho way over a miie. On this galiop, 'at llibs. above the minimum in thc hack six on Saturday, he should givo a good account of himself, eveu though his public form is nothing to enthuse over. « • ' Thala, the three-year-old daughtor of Arausio and the Limond mare Gurtsey, won at tho last Hawke's Bay Huut meeting. She is a galloper above the average hack, but unfortunateiy is showiug signs of unsoundness, and Avhen the summer tracks are here she may be very difiieult to keep Tight. However thc Marton course will not be hard on Saturday, so that Thalfi may be expocted to give a good acco, unt of herself. • # * Joe Louis won very easily and deeisively last Saturday at Foxton but those he beat were only average novices, while in the hack sprint at Marton he will have some slick gallopers against him. * # « t Le Touquet is engaged in two events — the hack six and five — and on his third last week-end the Gainscourt gelding will not go out as low as No. 8 in the betting, as he did at Foxton. # * » Rakanui is also engaged in two events — the nine furlongs handicap and the sprint — but as in the sprint he has nowhere near the class to eontent with that he had at Wanganui, I should guess that event will be his object. He still continues to pleaso in his private work on the Hastings tracks.

* w ® The name of Passion Flower appeare among the list for the chief handicap, but it should be that of her elder br other, Passion Fruit. This gelding in a false run at Foxton weighed in fourth, but that may be misleading as the pace was not on in the early part. * * * Joviality is another that was entered for two events the hack cup and thc five furlong race. Ho has an abundance of speed, but so far has not been tried over a distance, so that his stamina has yet to be tested. Despite his 10.2 in tho five-furlong flutter, that may be the race seleetcd for Mr. Hall's hand some horse # * • Should the going on Saturday be heavy, then Blue Tiger will have to be considered in the Spring Hack Cup, 1-J mile. He is iu fine order and in all probability will after Marton be taken on lo Ellerslie for the hurdle races at thc Auckland spring meeting. •rf If • Blue Shirt is an obvious lmprover since being schooled. At the . winter meeting of the Hawke's Bay Hvut over ten furlongs he was third to Traetile and Umpire when carrying 41bs. above the minimum. That day he looked to be most unlucky, as when making his run on the rails he was disappointed/ Now at the bottom of tho handicap Mr. A. A. Small's gelding wiTl be by no means neglected.
