Two Young Players of Promise CLUB TITLE MATCHES
(By
In an inter-club matcb played in Hastings last Saturday nigbt two very promising young players staged an interesting single. W. Iiowe, of the Napier Regimental Club, finaQly defeated Gosnell, of the Hastings Methodists, by 21 — 19. Gosnell, wbo won tbe B grade chainpionship singles at tbe recent Nortb Island tournament, bas since then .defeated H. Elliot, a Hawke's Bay representative, and be was expected "to beat Lowe. During tbe Nortb Island championships tbe latter sbowed a weakness wbicb ,an improved sense of anticipation should cure. Altbough a fit and fast-moving atblete, Lowe was tben inclined to dive after a difficult sbuttle and finish on bands and' knees, a position wbicb gave bim no chance to recover in time for tbe next stroke. Tbe matcb was won by tbe Methodist Club by nineteen games to tbirteen, but as tbe Napier Regimental Club team does not as yet contain any A grade players the result was not nnexpeeted. The three Hawke's Bay representatives on tbe Methodist side. C. Bowlands and tbe Misses Fear and Lassen, won all tbe games in wbicb tbey took part, f Taranaki Championships. In tbe tournament recently concluded at New Plymouth tbe results of tbe A grade championships were as follow: Men's singles. — Spedding beat Therleson, 15 — 5, 15— (I. Women's singles. — Miss Dempster (Waikato) beat Miss Wade (Auckland), 12—4, 11—6, 11—4. Men '8 doubles. — Sbale and Dallimora (Auckland) beat Spedding and Little 15—9, 15—4. Women's Doubles. — Misses Dempster and Wade beat Misses McCarthy and Moore, 15 — 8, 15 — 7. Mixed doubles. — Shalo and Miss Wade beat Daliimore and Miss Dempster, 15—10, 15—5, In tbis tournament tbe only title won by a Taranaki competitor was tbat of tbe men's singles. J. Spedding, tbe winner of tbis event, bas in botb tbe last two New Zealand cbampionsbip meetings been runner-up, to Phil Hawkeswortli. It is a peculiar fact tbat tbese two men should consistently defeat tbe leading players from tbe main cities. In lawn tennis cireles tbo leading country players are seldom in tbo same class as tbe highly-ranked city experts; it appears that badminton stars need less continuous practice tban tbeir contemporaries of tbo tennis courts, Club Championships. At tbis late stage of tbe season most interest is centred on tbe club championships. In tbis connection some of tbe local badminton clubs, by reserving special dates for these events, set an example whicb tbe major tennis clubs of Hastings and Napier migbt well follow. j' In tbe Hastings Club, among whose members are eleven "ranked" players, tbe xesults of tbe championships are not easy to forecast. In tbe men's singles Noel Wilson is likely to meet in the final either Read or Vesty, aeeording to tbeir positions in tbe "draw." If tbese two much-improved young players should meet, Read should win; not because be bas a better stroke equipment, but because mucb experience in competitive tennis bas given bim tbe correct matcb temperament. It remains to be seen wbether be can extend Wilson. In tbe men's doubles Vesty and Read should defeat Wilson and Elliot; last season tbis event was won by Watson and Collinge, but Watson is unforiunately out of tbe game this winter. In the women's singles Miss Lassen, wbo is also a'member of tbe Meihodist Club, might defeat eitber Miss Maedonald or Miss Glenny, who are botb above ber on tbe ranking list. In tbe mixed doubles tbe chances seem to favour Vesty and Miss Macdonald; in doubles Vesty 's celebrated smasb is a most effective weapon.
