Anniversary of Settlement

NOIiBEWOOD, Last Night. The Norwegian flag flying over the township of Norsewood on Monday markcd the anniversary of the landing of the Norwegians, Swedes and Danes und tho founding of the settlement on rieptember 20, 1S72. Only one of the pioncer settlers is living in the district at tho present time. He is Mr A. E. Laurvjg, who is still liale and hearty although over 00 years of age. The early settlers were granted section s on et'.sy terms unddr the dei'eired-payirient system. They landed by ship) at' Napier and left their wives and children at the Napier barracks, at the top of what is now known as liospital Hill, while the men proeeeded to the bush-clad district to make prcparations for the establishment of a home. Bullock drays were used to make the journey from Napier, and the roads were nothing more "than bridle tracks. Great hardships accompanied the founding of the settlement. The North Makaretu township was scttled by the second batch of immigrants about 1874.
