BEST-KEPT GARDEN COMPETITION

Date of Closing Extended to Next Monday AMENDED PRIZE MONEY Though entries for the best-kept residential garden competition, proposed by the Hastings and District Progress League, are not up to expectations and do not reach the total required, the league has deeided to extend the time of entry and amend the prize-money in proportion of the number of entries received. "When we were handed all the entries from the various depots last evening 1 was most agreeably surprised to iind them more than 1 expected earlier in tlie day," said Mr G. E. G. Rogers, secretary of the league this .norning. "There were sufficieut entries, though not near the 50 that we required, to Indicate clearly that the people were interested in tlie competition, so the committee has deeided uot to abandou the proposal altogether but to carry on under modified conditions.1' Mr Rogers said that the matter \vg& discussed by the special committee last evening, and it was agreed that there were not sufficieut entries to enable the competition to be proceeded with under the terms of the original prize mouey. It was deeided to" extend the date-. of closing of entries until next Monday in the hope that further entries would be received, several members being of the opinion that more residents would be prepared to enter if their attention was again drawn to the competition. In the meantiine, it was deeided that though the competition shall be conducted with tlie entries already received, the committee go into the matter of the prize-money and rcvise the awards as well as effect certain icvision of the conditions and submit these to the entrants who have alreai.j cntered.
