Queensland Bans Betting ' Away from Racecourse

AUCKLAND, Last Night. The legislation passed by the Queensland Government scven months ago and providing for sevore penalties for betting outside raceeourses has revolutiomsed racing in Queensland, according to Mr. P. J. O'Shea, a prominent solicitor, of Brisbaue, and chairman of the Queensland Turf Club, who is a through passenger by the' Mariposa to the United States. He said that the legislation had largely rid Queensland of starting-price betting and helped clubs to pay more substantial stakes. This system did not interfere with the paddock, but cut the foundation for under the feet of the ledger and flat enelosures, Previously his club's average attendance on the flat had bccn 650, whereas immediately after the enactxnent of the legislation they had an attendance of 5000 people in two days. Tho attend.ance in the ledger also had increased by 40 per cent. The increased attendances were reflectcd in tho totalisator, which at the 1936 meeting * had put through £42,000, as compared with £64,000 this year,
