"Much More Serious Than People Realise" DEFENCE CO-OPERATION
'(Bj Telegraph-
AUCKLAND, Last Night. The necessily for close co-operation jbetween Australia and New Zealand in t matiere of defence was stressed by General Sir Harry Chauvel, known to thousands of Australian and New Zealand cavalrymen as commander of all 'the mounted troops in the Palestine Campaign during the Great War, who arrived in Auckland by the Aorangi !to-day. He is returning -to Sydney , after leading the Australian conti'ngent Vat the Coronation. Sir Harry said ho regarded.the world situation as being very serious, much' more-so than the people of Australia and Kew Zealand realised. European conditions had been disturbing and added complications had been introduced by the position in the East,. jwhich naturally concerned countries 3bordering rhe Pacific. "Personally, I think Kew Zealand and Australia should work more closely together than in fhe-past in matters of defence," he stated. "In this connecjtion their problems are the same. It has been and will continue to be a nawal qucstion. Of course, thero is a necessity for a' complement of coast defences and a strong air arm." Sir Harry added that the defence i»xpencliture of Australia and Kew Zea- i 'land was more than justified by the graveness of world conditions.
