CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Most of the first spell in the Canter bury-West Coast match at Lancaster Park on "Saturday was tame, but tbe second sjiell had not been' in progress Lyo'minutes before- the game assum'e-d the spcctacular thrills usually associated Avith the Oauterubury - West Coast Rugby fixture. Finally Canterbury scored the deciding try just on time, winning by 14 points to 11. It was their first victory over the West Coast for over two years. The play in the second spell switched rapidly up and down the field in rusb and counter-rush. The handling was much better than in the first spell and the backing up was superb. The tackling of the West Coast backs, Costello, Manu and Roberts in particular, was one of the features of the game. Canterbury's main asset in the back division was speed, but this was only properly applied iu the second spell McAuliffe, Mortlock and Nolaa were the outstanding Canterbury backs with Chinnery also giving a fine cxhibition as left wing three-quarter. However( Mann, the Coast second five-eighth, was the most elusive back on the field. The Coast forwards, with King, Kirkwood, Daly and Pascoe mostly in the van, frequently brolre away from the xuek and they gave the Canterbury defence a heavy test. Ranlun, as usual, was the decisive factor in. Canterbury 'a win. He scored two tries himself and had a hand in the finai eifort that clinched the game. The turf was hard and dry. In the first half two tries were scored for Canterbury by Rankin, Herman converting one. Canterbury were eight and the Coast nil. In the second spell the scorers for West Coast were Manu, who converted his own try, and Pascoe Mann also kicked a difiicult penalty goal.
