Wken the Australian Fcderal Parliament goos to tlio eloctions at the oixd of Oetober ono of tke main issues will bo defence poliey. Tke Government gives a prominent place to tke navy. The Labour Opposition favours a vigorous programme for internal defence, but it kolds tkat naval nocds are entifely suhordinatc. On tke latter question tko partics will divide at the election. The Labour Party is expected to advocate an espansion of crodit for various purposes. The Government will probably follow the recent repoft of the Bankiiig Commission and stand for sound finance, rather than risk inflation, Tho Government has adopted recommendations of the Commission providing for a new branch of the Commonwealth Bank to deal with long-term mortgiages aud for another branch to lielp in finaUcing secondary industries.
