AUCKLAND, This DayAfter his fruitless trip to Riccarton, High Quality is down to make his reappearance over the sticks at Avondale on Monday, and as the elass is not very high, he may make amehds for hxs southern failures. Tonnerre, who was regarded as a Railway Handicap possibility last Boxing Day (he was injured through coming into contact with the rail during the running of that event) is an entry for the open sprint on the second day at Avondale, and if ahywhere near his best, he Would take some beating. Ro has been rather disappointing, however. Kelly is to be given a run in the sprint at Avondale on Monday and this will tend to sharpen him up for later handicap events, the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie three weeks hence probably being his mission. H has been working niefely at headquarters, and while he can yet do with plenty of work a tun on Monday will help to hring him along still further. It was thought that High Commissioner Would have had his next race at Avondale on Monday, but latest reports from Te Rapa indicatO that he is being kept specially for the Waikato Hunt Cup at Cambridge on Labour Day. This gelding won over the sticks at Ellerslie a month baelt, and as he has a second in a Great Northern Steeplechase his ptesenCe in thfe Cambridge eross-country event should be sufficient to keep the field down to small proportions. Oue of the unlucky hacks at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting last month was Locknit, for after making up some ground in the middle stages he was right up behind the leading division at the home turn. Then lie was carried out very wide, aud this made his tasic hopeless. Nevertheless, it was cer* tainly a promising start for the new season, and he should not be long in getting on the winning list. He is engaged at Avondale this week-end, and the minor hack sprint on Monday may see him again showing up. Has the Pace. > Cardsharper has been a disappointment in his last two or three outings, and'%e has either been over-rated or it may be that he will do better on a big track. He showed plenty of speed at both New Plymouth and Wanganui, but he is now at Avondale, and is carded for the minor hack sprint on Monday. It will be interesting to see if this hack will shape better over the big Avondale course, where he will have plenty Of roorn for galloping, even in what looks like being a large field. After fiis failure at Ellerslie last month, when he started favourite in the Jellicoe Handicap, little has been heard of Erndale. However, thefe is little wrong With him, and it is probable that he will be prodiiced at Avondale on Monday. He is in the mile and . aquarter nad the open six furlong race, and as the going will be easy, it should suit him. A free goer, he may be a sulprise packet, even itt the good opposition he will find levelled against him. A Better Distance. Mazir is due to make his reappearattce on a raceeourse at the Taumarunui fixture at Paeroa to-day fortnight, for »he has been accorded a nominatiou in the sprint race the first day. La^t season the big chestnut son of Wkfrlwind was oue of the province's best gallopers, and now he has had a good spell he may be all the better for it. He can stay, too, and a rich handicap should go his way before the season is much fajther advanced, with good prize money to be piclted up in a few weeks at the Waikato and Takapuna fixtures, the last big gatherings prior to the midsummer carnival at Ellerslie. Another good handicap performer about due to unfUrl the colotirs again is Master Brierly, and he will probably be prodnced at Avondale on Monday, after which a race or two at Paeroa is planned aa part of his further preparation for coming handicap events, the most important being the Mitchelson Cup next month. Master Brierly has been indulged in plenty of long work, and he looks fairly well forward. Royal Appellant has been kept going throughout the winter, and he will have the necossary condition for the big event on Monday.
