TERRIBLE JOURNEY
Misfortune Befalls Explorer (Received 17, 10.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 10.. Tho tale of a terriblo journey of 400 miles from the interior of Papua to the coast, with a coiripanion who is seriously ill, lias rcached Sydney. Jack Hides aud David Lyell were loading au exploring expedition in Papua, when Mr Lyell lell ill. Mr Hides docidod to dash for the coast down the Fly River. He had practically to carry Mr Lyell a considerable distanee. The party were attacked by berl-berl. Five of the natives died and the others, Who were sulfering from the disease, were hclpless. Mr Hides took the risk of rafling the party througli a gorge. However, they ran into a tidal bore and lost the canoe and everything in it. They almost lost their lives. The rcmainder of thc jouruey was made under terriblo condilions, Mr Lyell is in ti critical condition.
