MR. JOHN GRIFFEN
The death occurred in Gisborne on Monday of Mr. John Griffen, a pionect of the district, who had reachei tli« age of 86 years. The iate Mr. Griffen was born in Loughall, Ireland, and came out to New Zealand in tho sailing ship Mataura, landing at Napier in November, 1877 For two years Mr. Griffen was employed on a Hawke's Bay statiou owned by Mr. Spence, sonr. In 1879 Mr. Griffen was omployed for many years by tho late Mr. Woodbine Johnstone, Miriwai. For about two years he was absen i'rom New Zealand wkcn he took part iu tho Kimberley guld rush. He travelled exteusively over the nortkern part of Western Australia. On his return to New Zealand. Mr. Griffen was exigaged ia farming unLil his retirernent, about 20 years ago. He had resided ever since Avith his daughtor, Mrs. W. Hayes, Valley road, Mr. Griffen formerly farmed a large area of land in Mangapapa, inelnding a portioil of the present subiirb. He was also interested at one time in a farm at Motu. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs W, Hayes, and two sons, Messrs James and George Griffen. all of Gisborne.
