Young Man Appears Before Court THE ARUNDEL CRIME

TIMARU, Last Night. The intensiA'e polico investigations whicli have been carried out since an clderly storekeepcr was found dead in thc kitchen at the rear of his shop at Arundel reached a startling climax today when detectives at Christchurch arrested Itandall Reginald Smith (24,), a labourer of no fixed abode, on a charge of murdering William Gaby. The arrest, which was effected by DetectiveSergeant E. M. Thomas, of Timaru, and • Detective-Sergeant' J. Biekerdike, of Christchurch, this morningy .was .brbught about as the result of the combined.cooperation and goo'd teamwork ' of "the Timaru, Christchurch - and • Dunedin police. . . ' ' . Accused appeared before the Court ia Christchurch to-day and was remanded to September 21. It will be some- time before the police are ready to present 1 their case in Court but a considerable amount of preliminaTv work has already been accomplished. It is practically eertain that the trial will take place ia Timaru in which police ^distriet the crime was eommitted. Accused will no doubt be kept at Paparua and brought to Timaru on the eve of the lower Cburt hearing. The police are inquiring for the driver of an Essex car , which passed Rangitata about 8.15 on the night of the tragedy and picked up a ma'n three or four miles on the Geraldine side of Arundel and gave him a lift to Timaru. The matter is regarded/as important. Certain. niatters at Arundel have yet to be finalised and when the work is completed, the police," including Supefintendent Cameron, will return to their normal stations.
